Leidos is seeking a skilled Weld Engineer to join our dynamic team at the Mechanical Manufacturing Facility in Huntsville, AL.
The Weld Engineer will primarily support GTAW, GMAW and electron beam welding operations, leveraging expertise in welding processes, metallurgy, materials science, and quality standards. This role involves designing, supervising, and evaluating welding procedures and operations to meet stringent technical requirements. They will also support manufacturing engineering functions such as MES support, MBOM management in MES and ERP systems, process development, participating in RCCA investigations, and general engineering support.
Primary Responsibilities
Develop and qualify welding procedures in accordance with industry standards and customer specifications.
Plan and oversee welding operations, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, contracts, and drawings.
Evaluate weld designs and provide technical recommendations to improve quality, performance, and manufacturability.
Collaborate with manufacturing engineers, CNC programmers, and quality teams to ensure seamless integration of welding processes in the production workflow.
Troubleshoot welding issues, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to address defects or inefficiencies.
Support continuous improvement initiatives focusing on safety, quality, cost, and delivery, including Lean Manufacturing principles like 5S, Kaizens, and Value Stream Mapping (VSM).
Provide guidance on material selection, heat treatment, and weldability considerations for various aerospace alloys and materials.
Stay updated on advancements in welding technologies and standards, incorporating best practices into operations.
Maintain detailed records of welding procedures, qualifications, and inspection results.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field with at least 2 years of experience in welding engineering, with expertise in electron beam welding preferred. In lieu of a degree, equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Strong knowledge of welding processes, materials, and codes (e.g., AWS D17.1, ASME, ISO).
Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and tools.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Must be a US Citizen and must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with advanced welding techniques and non-destructive testing (NDT).
Background in aerospace, defense, or high-precision manufacturing environments.
Certifications such as CWI (Certified Welding Inspector).
Experience with automated weld processes and programming.

Pay Range $67,600.00 - $122,200.00
