Job Title: Senior Packaging Engineer
Location: Sylmar, CA
What we’re looking for:
We are looking for a dynamic and innovative experienced Senior Packaging Engineer who will be responsible for leading refrigerated merchandise packaging engineering efforts, candidate will manage development and execution of the current packaging process roadmap and NPD projects, working with internal design, manufacturing, & reliability teams and external material, equipment, & manufacturing suppliers.
What you’ll be responsible for in this role:
- Manage engineering package for NPD and Quality projects from concept to completion, including scheduling, cost & labor savings deliverables. Implement and design new packaging material to improve current design follow up stage/gate process.
- Collaborate in strategic projects within Sourcing, Production, Quality, Warranty/Services and Intercompany to provide guidance and technical support to product specs, data analysis, and technical recommendations
- Collaborate with manufacturing during product development stage to provide packaging solutions to issues during the product implementation.
- Develop 3D CAD models, assembly, drawings, and create & audit structured BOM, released ECN’s as well as PDM experience (Solid Works Manage & Enovia preferred)
- Ensure the new packaging comply with codes, agency listings (UL)
- Coordinate the request and follow-up of prototyping construction for new products.
- Lead test plans revisions during the product development (DVP) with the lab engineer to validate the product and have FMEA review with the team.
- Ability to effectively problem-solve using problem solving tools and techniques (A3, fishbone, root cause, 5-Whys)
- Conducts regular design, quality, cost, manufacturability and safety reviews with project team and support functions.
- Perform Packaging requirements & follow up with vendors new tooling.
- Leading Quality and Continuous improvement projects related Packaging material
- Candidate will be responsible for the product Integrity and packaging creation of project plans including timeline, cost, and risk assessments and mitigation plan.
- Manage Engineer packaging requirements for current production, packaging documentation and management of packaging line trials at New product development stages.
- Responsible for influencing packaging and product design by addressing the structural integrity and reliability issues in refrigerated product at Dover. The scope is to address all mechanical aspects of packaging technology and associated material and process interactions.
- Responsible for the modeling and simulation, design of experiment, and testing, whichever comes first for best engineering practice, of mechanical responses of package products.
- Solid background in applied mechanics, especially computational and/or experimental solid mechanics, is required. In-depth knowledge of packaging is highly desired.
- Lead the development of packaging & equipment specifications.
- Manage Packaging activities, working cross-functionally to define scope, design, manufacturability, cost, capital, risk, and schedules for capital projects.
- Drive vendor selection and assessment processes for packaging equipment.
- Provide input into user requirements, design specifications, process parameters, and FMEA assessments.
- Establish and maintain best practices and functional standards for packaging to promote standardization of material, equipment, processes, and systems.
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for packaging requirements, driving alignment on procedures and standards within internal teams.
- Execute the packaging design of processes and equipment, leveraging innovative engineering techniques and benchmarking both internally and externally.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies for packaging equipment and materials, conducting testing as part of the technical roadmap.
- Lead capital projects, ensuring adherence to New product development project timelines.
- Participate on the Stage Gate process on New projects, from conceptual design to validation, and qualification.
- Consult with R&D, purchasing, customer service, maintenance and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.
- Standardize and reduce complexity on Legacy models current packaging.
- Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time
What are the basic qualifications?
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science
- Minimum of 7 years of mechanical engineer experience with 3 years of relevant experience as a Packaging Engineer
What are the preferred qualifications?
- Familiarity with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are required and basic statistical analysis techniques are preferred.
- Proficiency in 3D design & simulation software Solidworks, GD&T, PDM and manufacturing process knowledge
- Understand packaging machinery safety standards
- Solid understanding of a broad spectrum of packaging materials, structures, components, and related conversion processes is required.
- Lean/Six Sigma Certification a plus.
- Project management skills, technical management is a plus.
- This position requires in-depth knowledge of materials and processes used in commercial refrigeration, Extrusions, Glass, Plastic components.
- Strong background in computational solid mechanics and/or experimental solid mechanics with emphasis on failure analysis and design of experiments.
- Strong oral and written communication skills - verbal, written, and presentation.

- A technical and regulatory background in packaging requirement for door display products industry.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) are required. Expected to be able to present own work to peers and cross-functional teams.
- Strong understanding of SPC techniques, FMEAs, Six Sigma, and Reliability Standards.
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data, identify root causes, draw conclusions and generate reports that present sound data driven conclusions.

Work Arrangement : Onsite
Salary Range : $112,335.00 - $135,021.00
