SUMMARY (This position can be located in Willowbrook, IL)
A contracting development engineer is responsible for performing the engineering required to commercialize HVAC systems and is responsible for varied engineering assignments requiring a broad knowledge of engineering specialties relating to HVAC systems. This includes both the development of new systems and product capabilities to enable systems. Common activities will include system analysis including modeling, evaluation of available equipment and controls for system applications and creation of commercial documentation and tools for system market introduction. This position requires engineering analysis and some project management activity. Serving and supporting field sales offices and participation in key industry associations is a part of this role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop HVAC systems and solutions using a combination of Trane equipment and controls and other leading HVAC equipment and systems that include project scoping, concept development, engineering analysis, and system validation.
- Manage the design including conceptual site plans and preliminary engineering documents through construction documents.
- Responsible for planning, analyzing and timely completion of assigned activities.
- Responsible for estimating and developing the installation of various equipment.
- Communicates with customers and their representatives, including building owners, subcontractors, and field support staff.
- Prepare and maintain cost estimates.
- Supports Account Managers in developing and establishing project installation budgets.
- Supports Account Managers in preparing the sub-contractor request for quotation’s (RFQ) including: scope statements; plans and milestone dates; specs; permitting and bonding requirements
- Serve as subject matter expert on capabilities to improve existing systems and processes.
- Develop subject matter expertise and broad HVAC systems knowledge.
- Develop and write HVAC system level sequence of operations and other system level control requirements.
- Maintains customer satisfaction by investigating concerns, implementing corrective action, and communicating with customers or their representative.
- Provides guidance and support to installation team to ensure project is completed as designed.
- Provide key technical support in pursuit of Trane business, including participation on strategic job acquisition teams.
- Flexibility to work outside normal work hours/weekends, as required.
- Some travel with occasional overnight stays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a strong thermal/fluid energy and/or controls background.
- Experience should demonstrate successful project delivery including project drawings and estimates.
- Must possess the communication skills and level of literacy, scientific knowledge and mathematical skills corresponding with the completion of bachelor’s program.
- Must have a general knowledge of basic engineering, electricity, mechanical HVAC systems and the building construction industry.
- Electrical, mechanical, and/or power engineering background is a plus.
- Proficiency in Visio, AutoCAD and other design software.
- A Professional Engineering license may be beneficial but is not essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to operate computer keyboard and telephone. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk up and down stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to utilize commercial air travel. This position works in a typical construction environment, splitting time between office work and job sites. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
