Title:
Systems Engineer for Science Teams for Artemis Missions
Belong. Connect. Grow. with KBR!
KBR is a company of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers, and dreamers; but we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to Belong, Connect, and Grow and we are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive workplace that places an emphasis on valuing our people, delivering for our customers, working with integrity, empowering our employees, and working as a team of teams.
We are still learning about the role of the Payload Integration Managers (PIMs) for payloads and samples. We expect them to handle much of the interfacing with other programs and documentation. However, there is still a need for additional technical support, particularly in supporting risk tracking and mitigation, providing systems-level technical advice looking across Artemis mission geology teams, sample return plans and approaches; and other relevant Science Mission Directorate (SMD) activities; as well as providing input to change requests (CRs) and maintaining situational awareness of, and providing input on, other technical issues that may impact science on Artemis missions. While some of the tasks below focus on processes like risk management, the Systems Engineer is expected to have the technical knowledge needed to help address key risks for Artemis Science.
Potential Duties:
- Serve as Science implementation risk manager, including risk identification, risk reporting, and risk mitigation, utilizing a streamlined approach to identifying risks to SMD being able to achieve its science goals using the Artemis architecture. Develop deeper mitigation strategies for high impact risks that will affect SMD’s core interests and collaborate with relevant parties such as M2M programs and risk owners in helping to mitigate the risks. Work with SMD and AIST to identify separate risk owners when necessary.
- Conduct technical analysis, risk-based analysis and mitigation, and technical solutions to optimize scientific deliverables and related activities within Artemis Science.
- Provide technical support and coordination of activities related to integrating science needs with Artemis mission architecture
- Review Artemis mission and system architecture documents that are sent out for configuration-managed change requests (CRs) and which are expected to influence what science can be achieved on Artemis missions, as requested by ESSIO. Provide system-level technical insight for impacts to science capabilities and suggested technical edits
- Working with the PIMs and relevant SMD element managers (such as PMPO), ensure that timing of SMD element schedules aligns with need dates of ESDMD provided capabilities. (Expectation is that the PIM will lead this activity and level of support from SMD is anticipated to be to help identify gaps and provide some holistic perspective from Artemis science team as needed)
Qualifications:
- BS in a STEM-related discipline
- 15+ years of experience
- NASA experience highly desired
- Risk management experience
LOCATION - This work will be performed onsite with occasional teleworking as needed.
Basic Compensation:
$162,500 - $243,800
The offered rate will be based on contract affordability and the selected candidate's working location, knowledge, skills, and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements.
