As a Senior Backend Software Engineer on Clover’s Core Services team, you’ll help build the essential features that power our web dashboard—including authentication, notifications, and third-party integrations—used by hundreds of thousands of merchants every day. You’ll play a key role in developing scalable, high-performance backend systems that enable seamless onboarding and global expansion for Clover merchants.
What you will do:
- Lead the design and development of scalable and reliable backend systems that power critical features in Clover’s Web Dashboard, including authentication, notifications, and partner integrations.
- Build and ship high-impact features that support global merchant onboarding, helping businesses around the world run more efficiently.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, QA engineers, and fellow developers to translate business goals into functional, maintainable software solutions.
- Mentor junior engineers, share best practices, and elevate the technical bar for the entire team through thoughtful code reviews and technical guidance.
- Own incident response for key services, troubleshoot complex issues quickly, and implement long-term solutions to minimize future impact.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, ensuring our backend systems remain fast, secure, and cost-effective at scale.
- Proactively address technical debt, continuously improving the health, clarity, and maintainability of our codebase.
- Stay ahead of the curve by evaluating new tools, frameworks, and technologies to keep Clover’s backend infrastructure competitive and future-ready.
What you will need to have:
- Bachelor's Degree (preferably Computer Science or Engineering) or equivalent combination of experience, education and military.
- 6+ years of professional experience developing server-side applications in Java (Java 8 or newer).
- Experience with MySQL and JDBC.
- Hands-on experience building RESTful web services and using tools like Postman and cURL.
- Proven experience with Spring Framework and Spring Boot, and architecting microservice-based systems.
- Experience with Java testing frameworks such as JUnit or TestNG.
- Demonstrated success in leading development teams and deploying complex systems to production. Possesses the ability to understand the broader organizational context and collaborate effectively with other teams to achieve wider benefits while consistently fulfilling individual responsibilities.
- Experience operating and supporting critical business applications.
What would be great to have:
- Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in Computer Science or related field.
- Experience with JPA, such as Hibernate.
- Experience with Spring Boot and/or similar Java-based frameworks.
- Experience with TLS and certificate management in Java (SSL).
