Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Warren Tech Center) three times (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.
The Role: General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our ECU Mechanical & Thermal Design team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on developing mechanical and thermal design of next generation ECUs (Electronic Control Units). The team is responsible for developing Mechanical and Thermal design of new next gen ECU designs, with math, CAD and analysis. The team also reviews and approves production ECU design changes. We are seeking a high-performing Mechanical Design Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of GM electronics design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and review of Electrical Controllers, for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. The successful Hardware Engineer - Mechanical Design will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.
As a Hardware Engineer - Mechanical Design, you will:
-
Execute mechanical design of ECUs per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product.
-
Work with cross functional teams for the selection of sealed/ un-sealed Headers & connectors for Power, High Speed Signals, communication signals, RF signals, I/O’s etc.. to support ECU’s designs and ensure compatibility with vehicle packaging constraints, thermal environments, and electrical requirements. Molded or Integrated headers/ connectors design into housing cover for ECU’s with plastic housing and integration of discrete headers for ECU’s with metal housing.
-
Connector terminals design, Bus bar design, material selection, sealing design, soldering processes or alternative PCB mounting etc.
-
Design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, electrical interface, PCBA mounts, connector interface and fastening etc.

Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis.
-
Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to mechanical designs.
-
Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electromechanical systems.
-
Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on ECU design per development cycles.
-
Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-risk product development.
-
Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers.
-
Drive Mechanical design strategy for the enterprise.
