Title:

Technical Writer

The successful candidate will be part of the KBR team supporting the Test Resource Management Center’s (TRMC) Big Data and Knowledge Management Team working on Big Data systems supporting DoD Test Ranges and various acquisition programs.  We are seeking a highly experienced DoD Technical Writer with a strong understanding of DoD processes and documentation standards to join our dynamic distributed team.  As a Technical Writer on our team, you will be instrumental in creating, editing and maintaining a wide range of technical documentation.  Your ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise and user-friendly content will be crucial to the success of our mission.  This role requires proven experience writing for DoD audiences and familiarity with DoD documentation standards. The successful candidate will have technical writing experience within the DoD community and should be prepared to provide writing & graphic layout samples alongside their resume.  Come join the ITEA award winning TRMC Big Data Knowledge Management team and be a part of the team responsible for revolutionizing how data analysis is performed across the entire Department of Defense!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including how-to guides, presentations, system administration guides, installation guides, end user training materials, API documentation, wiki pages and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of software engineers, system architects, system administrators, data scientists, data engineers, data analysts, trainers and program managers to ensure accuracy and completeness of documentation.
  • Review and edit documentation created by technical staff.
  • Adhere to DoD documentation standards, style guides and templates.
  • Manage document version control and configuration.
  • Self-motivated to proactively identify areas for documentation improvement and implement changes. To include the design, development, enhancement and rewriting of existing documentation and/or wiki pages to improve the quality of documentation available for our users.
  • Assist existing training staff in the development of technical presentations and training sessions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support the public release process for documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with graphics designers to create and enhance graphics for documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with documentation tools.
  • Proficiency with wiki tools such as Confluence.
  • Experience working with highly technical teams of engineers and scientists.
  • Experience working in a remote/distributed team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proven ability to effectively and professionally communicate with customers and teammates.
  • Confident presentation skills for large technical and non-technical groups.
  • Demonstrated initiative in improving documentation quality.

Work Environment:

  • Location: This position is mostly remote, but the individual must reside in an area near a military installation.
  • Travel Requirements: This position will require travel of 25% with potential surge to 50% to support end users located at various DoD ranges & labs located across the US (including Alaska and Hawaii).  
  • Working Hours: Standard

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance
  • 5+ years of technical writing experience within the DoD environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Desired:

  • 15+ years of technical writing experience with 5+ in DoD.
  • Experience with DoD Test and Evaluation.
  • Experience writing for a software intensive product team.
  • Knowledge of Big Data technologies (e.g., Spark, Kafka).
  • Proven experience documenting complex software systems, including big data platforms, cloud-based architecture, and data analytics tools.
  • Experience with automated documentation tools.

Basic Compensation:

$90,000 - $115.000 (For The Patuxent River, MD areas only)

$90,000 - $115,000 (For The Camarillo & San Diego, CA Areas only)

$90,000 - $115,000 (For The Los Angeles, CA Area Only)

$90,000 - $115,000 (For The Washington, DC Area Only)

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s working location, knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience, clearance level, contract affordability and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of a sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
