Job Summary:
We are currently seeking a Electrician Operator in Laurel, Montana. The Electrician Operator will be responsible for installing, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems associated with natural gas reciprocating engine–driven power generation equipment. The role ensures plant reliability, efficiency, and compliance with safety and environmental standards.
What You Will Do:
- Install, calibrate, and maintain pressure, temperature, flow, and vibration sensors on reciprocating engines and auxiliary systems.
- Configure and troubleshoot PLCs, SCADA, and engine monitoring systems.
- Perform loop checks, signal testing, and verification of control logic.
- Diagnose and repair faults in instrumentation, control wiring, and automation systems.
- Support preventive and predictive maintenance activities for gas engines, compressors, and generator auxiliaries. Maintain records of calibration, test results, and corrective actions.
- Assist operators and mechanical technicians with engine start-ups, shutdowns, and performance tuning.
- Monitor engine emissions, fuel systems, and protective devices to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Respond to alarms and system trips, providing technical expertise in root cause analysis.
- Follow all safety procedures and be a champion of safety culture
Degree Requirement:
Degree or technical certification in a relevant field or equivalent experience required
Top Candidates Will Have:
- 5+ years of experience as an instrumentation/control technician in a power plant, gas compression, or oil & gas facility.
- Hands-on experience with reciprocating engine instrumentation and control systems.

Level Extensive Experience:
- Designs a standard operating procedure, detailing steps and activities, within a department; develops procedures, processes, and controls to implement and execute policy requirements.
- Optimizes complex SOPs according to changes in organizational procedures.
- Monitors the relationship between SOPs and performance improvement (e.g. quality improvement).
- Evaluates the benefits and drawbacks of industry-specific SOPs.
- Integrates best practices into the design, implementation and evaluation of organizational SOPs.
- Evaluates the causes behind deviations from and modifications to existing SOPs.
Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

- Develops a maintenance and repair mechanism for power generation equipment.
- Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems in power generation processes.
- Creates a series of criteria and standards to evaluate electric power quality.
- Monitors energy consumption and waste inside power plants.
- Establishes an evaluation system to monitor generator operations.
Electrician Services: Knowledge of electrical power, lighting and control systems; ability to plan and perform electrical work for buildings, infrastructures, and equipment.
Level Extensive Experience:
- Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring and lighting.
- Oversees and carries out all activities and tasks associated with electrician services.
- Prepares sketches and blueprints for wiring and equipment.
- Maintains and repairs electrical heating and ventilation equipment.
- Ensures conformance with safety codes.
- Troubleshoots control circuits.
Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
Level Extensive Experience:
- Evaluates business impact of failure and the criticality and timing of needed resolution.
- Resolves difficult or high-impact equipment and systems problems.
- Monitors machine performance and history; addresses excessive maintenance or repair needs.
- Coaches others how to resolve integration or communications problems in multi-vendor environment.
- Applies specific techniques for isolating a problem and defining resolution approach.
- Uses advanced diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems.

Summary Pay Range:
$79,800.00 - $119,760.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
