Caterpillar is seeking a Laboratory Support Engineer at our Clayton Machine Development Center. In this role, you will work with and install the electronic instrumentation and measurement tools used to ensure that our products will meet and exceed our customer’s expectations. You will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with different machine types including Backhoe Loaders (BHL), Mini Hydraulic Excavators (MHE), Small Wheel Loaders (SWL), Small Track Type Tractors (STTT), Work Tool Attachments (WT), as well as other non-public, future products. You’ll also work with different machine systems & components (hydraulic, cooling, electrical, powertrain, structural, etc.) and advanced technologies such as remote control, autonomy, and electrification.
What You Will Do:
- Review test documentation (instrumentation request list, work order, gage map) and collaborate with T&D Engineer or attend planning meetings to clarify objectives, requirements, and equipment needs.
- Install instrumentation by checking out from inventory, following SOPs for safe setup, calibration, and functional checks to ensure data accuracy before test hand-off.
- Support ongoing tests by providing instrumentation troubleshooting, repairs, and adjustments as needed.
- Remove instrumentation post-test, clean and inspect components, perform integrity checks, and return to inventory or send for calibration; document any issues with T&D Engineer.
- Maintain compliance with Quality Management Systems (e.g., ISO17025) by auditing and updating calibration records and inventory data.
- Investigating and procuring new equipment by reviewing specifications, coordinating with suppliers, developing SOPs, training materials, helping with inventory and maintain supplies.
- Assist with mechanical tasks such as machine assembly/disassembly, part swaps, fabrication, and test setup modifications.
What You Have (Basic Qualifications):
- Demonstrated ability to perform tasks with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, ensuring precision in all aspects of work.
- Proven experience in troubleshooting technical problems using appropriate tools and techniques to identify, diagnose, and resolve issues in a manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of product testing methodologies, including the ability to design, plan, and execute test strategies to ensure product quality throughout the manufacturing process.
- Familiarity with technical excellence practices, including applying relevant technologies and methods to solve complex engineering challenges.
Top Candidates Will Have:
- Progressive experience in test instrumentation, including sensors/transducers, vehicle CAN networks, and data acquisition (DAQ) systems.
- Hands-on experience setting up and operating at least one DAQ system, such as HBM/HBK eDAQs, eDAQ Lite, TCE, or DEWEsoft.
- Proficiency in configuring and using at least three types of sensors or transducers, including:
o Strain-based (e.g., pressure transducers, strain gauges)
o Speed/frequency/pulse-based (e.g., flow meters, phototach, 5th wheel)
o Temperature (e.g., thermocouples)
o Accelerometers
o Electrical (voltage/current)
o GPS
o CAN networks and electronic control modules (ECM/ECU)

- Office Model: This position requires the employee to work a 5-day-a-week schedule in the office.
- Other requirements: May work on 4-6’ elevated platforms & work outside in the test fields year-round. May regularly lift up to 35 lb.

Summary Pay Range:
$79,800.00 - $119,760.00
