Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Orion, MI on a full-time basis.
The Role:
Lead the development and optimization of advanced vision and robotic systems, driving automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and reliability in manufacturing. Oversee system architecture, mentor junior engineers, and troubleshoot complex robotic integration challenges. Collaborate with cross-functional leadership to implement emerging technologies, optimize production workflows, and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
What You'll Do (Job Requirements):
- Staying abreast of new controls technologies (PLC, HMI, networks, robot, vision) and of equipment and tools required in plant for the production of high-quality parts
- Providing project report outs to senior management
- Providing technical direction to less experienced engineers
- Review manufacturing system requirements and design robust vision and robotics applications
- New robot program implementation/execution (SOR prep, forecasting, controls/robotics design, equipment build/run-off and buyoff)
- Provide design, construction, integration, and plant installation support for vision and robotics systems including error proofing, robot guidance and part quality. Develop scalable solution sets.
- Interface with plant shops, other ME departments and regional automation execution teams to gather feedback and document manufacturing requirements
- Interface with vision and robotics equipment suppliers and integration suppliers
- Provide vision system hardware and software designs including vision equipment devices, power distribution, I/O networks, software, and cost estimating.
- Ensure vision application designs comply with GM Standards.
- Supervise detailed designs by contractors when necessary.
- Specify vision system components, functional requirements and integration methods.
- Evaluate and validate new vision technologies for use in manufacturing plants.
- Provide support for: plant vision issues, new equipment startup, troubleshooting, reprogramming, diagnostic equipment usage, and interfacing with skilled trades personnel.
- Provide plant technical support with the development, planning and strategies for maintaining and equipment
- Work may involve development and testing of advanced process technology
Qualifications - Basic Required:
- Bachelors of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
- Experience with the design, build and start-up of manufacturing systems
- Experience with design, set up, and debug of vision systems for error proofing, robot guidance or part quality.
- Demonstrated excellent level of analytical ability, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy
- Ability to Travel up to 25%
What Gives You a Competitive Edge ( Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience with the design and build of machine vision in manufacturing systems, including equipment selection and lighting techniques
- Experience deploying machine vision in manufacturing systems, including software tuning and adjustment for optimal performance
- Experience with Matrox Design Assistant Software and other machine vision programming software.
- Experience developing GM Manufacturing Automation and Controls Standards
- Experience with Industrial communication protocols and networking strategies
- AIA Certified Vision Professional – Basic or Advanced Certification
