As the Pentagon Partnership & Policy Director, you will be a key leader within USAA's Policy and Alliances team, responsible for developing and implementing strategies to build and maintain strong relationships with Department of Defense (DoD) leadership. This role will be instrumental in identifying opportunities to influence defense-related policy and provide access to senior leaders. The Pentagon Partnership & Policy Director will also be responsible for providing insights and understanding of the challenges facing military families to those same leaders and help drive advocacy efforts, and lead initiatives that support active-duty military personnel and their families, and their transition to veteran status. This role will strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, increase influence in policy debates, and improve outcomes for USAA members and the military community, in alignment with USAA's advocacy efforts.
What you'll do:
Develop and execute a comprehensive engagement strategy for the DoD, aligned with USAA's overall advocacy goals.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key leaders and staff within the DoD.
Identify and analyze policy issues affecting active-duty military personnel and their families and develop policy recommendations to address these issues.
Coordinate USAA's participation in joint advocacy initiatives with key stakeholders to influence defense-related legislation and policy.
Represent USAA in policy discussions with external stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and community organizations.
Identify areas where there is alignment between USAA's advocacy efforts and the pain points of currently serving military personnel and their families.
Develop joint initiatives and look to drive policy or legislative change related to the currently serving and their families.
Serve as a subject matter expert on issues related to active-duty military personnel and their families, providing guidance and support to internal stakeholders.
Represent USAA at DoD-related conferences, events, and meetings.
Collaborate extensively with internal teams (Government Relations, Corporate Impact, Military Affairs, Public Affairs, Product Development, and the Chief Legal Office (CLO) to advance USAA's advocacy agenda and strategic goals.
Prepare briefings, reports, and presentations for senior management on DoD activities, partnerships, and policy initiatives.
Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
Bachelor's degree: OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
Minimum of 6 years of experience in government relations, policy analysis, military affairs, or a related field, with a focus on issues affecting active-duty military personnel and their families.
Strong knowledge of the DoD/DOW, its structure, and its key policy priorities.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Understanding of USAA's mission, values, and products.
Strong business acumen and strategic thinking skills.
Experience influencing and managing communication to senior executives, internal colleagues through concise, official and regular updates on status, progress, strategies and roadmaps
Extensive experience in Project Management.
What sets you apart:
Master’s degree in public policy (MPP), Business Administration (MBA), Strategic Studies, or related field required; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
Service on the Joint Staff, OSD/OSW, and/or Service Secretariat resulting in deep military community connections to develop and maintain senior level relationships with key military and veteran influencers and leaders.
A Secret or Top-Secret security clearance is not required but preferred.
Experience developing personnel policy for the military community
Experience developing and implementing successful advocacy strategies.
Previous experience positioning organizations as a military advocate supporting the military community driving business value & outcomes through affinity-based and mission-driven engagements and initiatives.
Experience providing military community subject matter expertise to support business plans.
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $143,320.00 - $273,930.00.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position will be based in our Washington, DC location.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
