As a Battery Systems Engineer – Design, you will design, analyze, build, and implement new battery systems, components, or technologies into Caterpillar customer applications.
What You Will Do
- Design battery systems used to integrate battery packages into customer applications, including structural rack/pack, concept design, and packaging optimization.
- Define interface routing and location for cooling, communications, and high-voltage connections.
- Design and integrate busbars for high-voltage battery systems ensuring optimal electrical performance and safety.
- Perform electro-mechanical simulations to validate design integrity under operational conditions.
- Conduct detailed thermal simulations to optimize cooling strategies and ensure thermal stability of battery systems.
- Utilize robust problem-solving and implementation processes to resolve and improve designs.
- Evaluate and optimize designs using structural and thermal simulation tools.
- Document and develop build improvements through design or process optimization.
- Support customers and support teams by developing Application & Integration guides and Disassembly & Assembly procedures.
- Collaborate with internal manufacturing and external purchasing partners to complete supplier selection, capability assessments, and implement APQP processes.
- Provide guidance to colleagues responsible for other portions of the product to ensure requirements and schedules are met.
- Contribute to the development of battery systems, Design FMEAs, and Risk Assessments.
- Protect Caterpillar’s intellectual property.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace or related field.
- More than 5 years of experience for candidates with a bachelor’s degree and more than 3 years for candidates with a master’s degree in mechanical design for automotive or battery energy storage systems.
- Experienced in cooling system design, concept design, and packaging.
- Familiarity with electrical components and harness design.
- Experience in busbar design for high-voltage battery applications.
- Proficiency in electro-mechanical and thermal simulation tools for battery system analysis.
- Strong understanding of battery pack architecture, thermal management, and structural safety requirements.
- Experience with DFMEA, GD&T, DFA/DFM, and design for manufacturability.
- Knowledge of materials selection (metals, composites, plastics) for structural applications.
