Work Arrangement:
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan or Austin, Texas three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.
The Role
We are the Cloud Engineering software team with GM’s Infrastructure Platforms organization, driving the foundation of GM’s multi-cloud ecosystem. Our mission is to deliver products that accelerate cloud adoption, enable rapid and reliable software delivery, and optimize cloud usage and costs across the enterprise.

This is a software engineering focused role within the Cloud Engineering organization with a heavy emphasis on promoting FinOps practices that will scale to the broader enterprise. You will play a pivotal role in driving company-wide cloud transformation by designing and developing foundational capabilities that empower teams to seamlessly onboard applications to the cloud, provision infrastructure at scale, and optimize their cloud resources for cost and utilization.
Your contributions will enable high-velocity software delivery, support cloud cost chargeback models, and enhance the developer experience across GM’s multi-cloud ecosystem. You’ll help teams rapidly build, iterate, and deploy cloud-native applications with confidence and efficiency. As a senior software engineer you will participate in a scrum team to deliver high quality software to production and lead technical decision-making efforts. You will be involved in designing features and working with peer teams to help them leverage the cloud effectively.
What You'll Do

Developing and maintaining solutions that simplify onboarding, infrastructure provisioning, and optimization across GM’s multi-cloud ecosystem.

Lead in the design and development of foundational platform capabilities that enhance developer experience, support chargeback models, and enable efficient cloud resource usage.

Work cross-functionally with product, infrastructure, operations, and security teams to drive alignment and deliver cohesive, enterprise-grade solutions.

Own reusable components and APIs that abstract complexity and promote consistency across cloud platforms and services.

Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends to ensure GM’s cloud platforms remain innovative, secure, and developer-friendly.

Provide guidance and mentorship to early career software engineers
Your Skills & Capabilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Go, Python, JavaScript) and familiarity with multi-language ecosystems

Hands-on experience with cloud-native applications and managing cloud infrastructure

Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information verbally and in writing

Strong background in building maintainable and testable code bases, including API design and unit testing
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred
Qualifications)

Experience designing and implementing developer portals or internal platforms to streamline cloud application development

Familiarity with SaaS-based cloud cost management tools such as Apptio

Hands-on experience with cloud cost optimization strategies and leveraging provider billing data for insights

Proficiency with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes

Experience with a variety of CI/CD implementations (e.g. GitHub Actions, ArgoCD)

Hands-on experience with production-grade operations, observability, and reliability engineering (e.g. OpenTelemetry, Datadog)

Experience integrating backend services with data-rich applications, including API gateways, service meshes, and data pipelines

Strong knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform

Experience working in a multi-cloud environment (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)
