As a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Power Electronic Systems & Component team, you will be joining an innovative team on the cutting edge of electrification. You will have the unique opportunity to direct and contribute to the concept, development, and design of power electronic components.
The Power Electronics team is responsible for end-to-end design and development of power electronics for multiple Caterpillar applications. You will have the opportunity to strengthening your simulation skills, analytical skills and mastery of mechanical engineering concepts associated with medium voltage inverter and converter design.
The position will prepare concept, design, development, and feasibility studies of complex power electronics projects and complete the design, analysis, and simulation effort as required.
Responsible for the execution and coordination of mechanical design efforts necessary for the successful design and development of low voltage (<1500V) power electronic components. This will include design and modeling of fabricated enclosures, cast components, bus bars, harnesses, plastics & electronics packaging. Excellent opportunity to work with and learn from a highly experienced team of engineers having significant experience across Caterpillar electric drive applications.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Work with the power conversion application engineering groups to establish the application architecture and electrical requirements for power electronics components/systems
- Work with MBDs NPI & NTI machine/product programs
- Develop design concepts and detailed 3D models for low voltage power electronics inverter and converter systems.
- Collaboration with the global teams for mechanical design and the release of prints.
- Play an active role in supplier collaboration and selection and development of the potential suppliers for the mechanical designs – some limited travel will be required
- Identify and work with other Caterpillar SMEs on aspects of the design in which team does not have the expertise to complete on their own
- Stay up to date with the latest advances in power electronics packaging technologies and solutions
What you have:
Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline preferred; Associates with strong experience acceptable
Technical Excellence: Product development experience (design/analysis). Demonstrated understanding of mechanical & electrical systems with special emphasis on electric drive systems/components
Level Working Knowledge:
• Experience with quality tools including FMEA, APQP, BIQ & PPAP
• Experience with NPI Issue resolution process
• Experience with power electronics systems/components
• Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.
• Effectively performs the technical job aspects, continuously building knowledge and keeping up-to-date on technical and procedural job components.
Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems. Experience with CFD & FEA analysis tools

• Consults on benefits and drawbacks of top-down design vs. bottom-up design.
• Compares and contrasts uses of bird's-eye views and worm's-eye views.
Product Design - MFG: Knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.
Level Extensive Experience:
• Develops improvement plans for senior management and evaluates the outcome of the design against the functionality.
• Advises others on the development of multiple products and their functionality.
• Trains others on advanced tools and approaches of product design.
• Monitors the processes and procedures of a complex product design to ensure functional requirements are met.
• Evaluates feedback from customers and consults on functional weaknesses.
• Controls design and development costs of a proposed product through effective resource coordination.
Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
Level Working Knowledge:
• Builds three-dimensional models with basic materials.
• Communicates with professionals to understand various requirements of product design.
• Tests and evaluates alternative means of production being considered for use.
• Uses automated tools to design or modify the design of a product.
• Assists in building a complex prototype of product.

Summary Pay Range:
$95,640.00 - $143,520.00
