About your role:
The Senior Manager, State Tax Controversy will lead the company’s state and local income/franchise tax audits, appeals and controversy matters across US state and local jurisdictions. This role requires deep technical knowledge of state income and franchise tax rules, the ability to interpret and defend complex tax positions, and strong project management skills. The Senior Manager will partner closely with internal tax, finance and legal teams, as well as external advisors, to efficiently resolve state tax issues and mitigate exposure. This role will support state tax planning strategies and is viewed as a value-added, trusted business advisor throughout the organization.
What you’ll do:
- Lead and manage state and local income / franchise tax audits, notices and inquiries from initial contact through resolution
- Coordinate data requests, draft responses to IDRs and inquiries, and manage communications with tax authorities
- Evaluate audit findings and identify opportunities to mitigate exposure through settlement
- Partner closely with Federal and State compliance teams to ensure consistent application of tax positions
- Collaborate with the domestic planning team to analyze audit trends, identify planning opportunities, and ensure alignment between controversy and planning positions
- Partner with tax accounting and reporting teams to ensure accurate and timely recognition of audit reserves and adjustments
- Maintain documentation of audit positions, correspondence, and settlements in accordance with internal controls and SOX requirements
- Monitor and interpret state tax legislative and regulatory changes and assess their potential impact on the company
- Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and risk management within the controversy area
Experience you’ll need to have:
- 8+ years of experience with a strong technical and applied knowledge base of State and Local (and US Federal) tax laws
- 8+ years of state and local tax experience
- Strong technical knowledge of state income / franchise tax rules and audit procedures
- Experience managing multiple state audits concurrently through resolution
- Bachelor's of Science in Accounting or related degree
Experience that would be great to have:
- CPA, JD or MST preferred
- 8+ years of experience with managing State and Local audits
- Big 4 Public Accounting experience or Fortune 500 multi-national company experience & CPA; Financial and/or technology industry experience
