Power Systems Engineer Job Summary: The Power Systems Electric Engineer will be responsible for leading the development, construction, and preparation for operations of a new manufacturing facility, with a strong emphasis on extremely high-voltage (EHV) electrical systems. This role demands extensive knowledge of commercial and industrial electrical infrastructure, high-voltage substations, and plant facility management. The Manager will ensure operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and reliably, while acting as the primary point of contact among contractors, utility companies, engineering consultants, and internal teams.
Power Systems Engineer Key Responsibilities:
- Manage operations, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of EHV substations, transformers, breakers, relays, and switchgear.
- Perform and supervise switching, load transfers, and equipment isolation per OSHA, NFPA, and NERC standards.
- Lead fault analysis, root cause investigations, and emergency response for electrical failures.
- Develop and enforce SOPs, safety protocols, and preventive maintenance for high-voltage systems.
- Train and mentor staff on arc flash safety, LOTO, and EHV best practices.
- Perform other duties as required to support organizational needs, in line with applicable laws
- Serve as the High-Voltage Substation Maintenance & Operations Engineer.
Facility Development & Construction:
- Lead full facility buildout from planning and design to commissioning and turnover.
- Review and approve drawings, schematics, and layouts to meet plant requirements.
- Oversee schedules, budgets, and contractor performance to ensure safe, timely delivery.
- Manage installation and commissioning of systems, including:
o High- and low-voltage distribution (3-phase, UPS, generators)
o HVAC and compressed air systems
o Plumbing and water systems
o Fire protection and life safety
Operations & Maintenance:
- Implement reliability and energy programs focused on electrical safety and uptime.
- Manage vendor contracts, facility budgets, and capital projects
- Lead risk assessments and drive reliability and operational improvements.
- Recruit and lead a skilled maintenance team with expertise in high-voltage systems.
Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, NERC, and local codes.
- Act as liaison with regulators, contractors, and utilities on facility and electrical safety.
- Promote a zero-incident culture and enforce safe work practices plant-wide
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field required; advanced degree preferred.
- 8–10 years of experience in facility management or construction, ideally within a manufacturing setting.
- At least 2 years of direct experience managing high-voltage substation operations (15kV–230kV+).
- Proven experience leading new facility construction projects, including both greenfield and brownfield sites.
- Hands-on knowledge of power distribution systems, switchgear, UPS, transformers, and EHV safety protocols.
- Strong background in leading contractors, vendors, and cross-functional project teams
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline (master’s preferred).
- 10+ years of experience in facilities management, including 2+ years overseeing high-voltage substation operations (15kV–230kV+).
- Deep technical expertise in EHV systems, transformers, relays, switchgear, UPS, and backup power systems.
- Successful track record managing plant construction projects (greenfield and/or brownfield) in manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to manage capital projects, vendor contracts, and large-scale budgets.
- Strong leadership, communication, and analytical problem-solving skills.
Essential Functions (ADA/Workers’ Comp Ready)
- Perform duties safely in high-voltage environments with required PPE
- Stand, walk, climb ladders, and access elevated areas as required.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of tools and equipment.
- Work in varying environmental conditions, including outdoor substations.
- Respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours.

- Primarily within a manufacturing and assembly warehouse with exposure to noise, machinery, and electrical systems

- Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods, and occasionally lift to [10–50 lbs.].

- Work may take place in office, warehouse, plant, or field settings, with possible exposure to noise, temperature fluctuations, and moving machinery.
