Position Summary:
The Kitchen/Cafeteria Assistant I performs routine and foundational kitchen duties in support of daily food service operations. This position assists with meal preparation, food service, sanitation, and cleanliness of the kitchen, cafeteria, and student areas. The role follows established procedures and standards and works under direct supervision to support efficient, safe, and sanitary kitchen operations.
Core Responsibilities:
The core responsibilities (essential functions) of the role include, but are not limited to, the following:
Kitchen Operations Support
- Assist with day-to-day kitchen operations supporting breakfast, lunch, and dinner service.
- Prepare and serve food according to established recipes, portioning, cooking, and serving standards.
- Set up, stock, and restock food service areas and supplies as directed.
- Support senior kitchen staff by following assigned tasks and instructions during service periods.
Food Preparation
- Prepare food items for service using basic cooking methods and equipment, including chopping vegetables, assisting with meat preparation, and preparing sauces as directed.
- Assist with food preparation under guidance while adhering to food safety and sanitation standards.
Sanitation, Safety & Cleanliness
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, cafeteria, student lounge, and food service areas.
- Assist with cleaning kitchen equipment, utensils, and workspaces to ensure all areas remain clean and in good working condition.
- Maintain assigned cleaning schedules for floors, mats, walls, hoods, equipment, and food storage areas.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, PPE, and preventative maintenance procedures.
Facility & Support Functions
- Restock and clean kitchen service areas, including cafeteria lines, breakfast bars, student kitchenettes, and vending areas.
- Assist with housing-related functions as required, including cleaning and linen laundry.
- Serve as a floater to assist other departments when needed, as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Follow all company policies, procedures, and core values.
- Perform additional duties as assigned based on operational needs.
Requirements:
Required Skills, Abilities, and Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in food preparation, kitchen support, or facilities cleaning.Maintain all required food handling certifications, e.g., Servsafe.
- Must be skilled in preparing a variety of meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables, dairy, and other food items using knives, electric mixers, immersion blenders, food processors, scales, and portion bags.
- Must be able to communicate clearly with managers, kitchen and dining room personnel and guests.
- Use proper personnel protective equipment (PPE) appropriately at all times.
- Reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in a standing position for long periods of time.
- Attention to detail.
- Work cooperatively or independently and inspires a team effort with all.
- Must be highly organized and able to work under deadlines.
- Work safely with minimal supervision.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Treats others with courtesy and respect.
- Well-groomed, presents a positive company image.
Desired Skills and Knowledge:
- At least one (1) year of cooking experience, including experience as a Line Cook, or Prep Cook.
- Excellent understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
- Accuracy and speed in executing assigned tasks.
- Familiar with industry’s best practices.
- Working knowledge of various computer software programs (MS Office, kitchen management software, POS)
Education and Certification Requirements:
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Required: Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a pre-employment motor vehicle record (MVR) check.
- Required: Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and maintain a drug-free status.
- Required: Obtain Servsafe certification within 30 days of employment
