Role Overview
Seeking a highly skilled Tooling Engineer to join Caterpillar Inc.’s powertrain manufacturing team. This role is critical to ensuring precision, efficiency, and reliability in machining and assembly operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of tools and fixtures that support high-accuracy production processes.
This position demands expertise in fixture design applications, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across engineering, production, and maintenance teams to deliver world-class manufacturing solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Tool & Fixture Design:
- Conceptualize, design, and develop precision tools, jigs, and fixtures for machining and assembly operations.
- Ensure designs meet Caterpillar’s stringent accuracy, durability, and safety standards.
- Development & Implementation:
- Validate tooling designs through simulations, trials, and production feedback.
- Drive continuous improvement in tooling efficiency, ergonomics, and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintenance & Support:
- Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance of tools and fixtures.
- Troubleshoot tooling issues to minimize downtime and ensure smooth production flow.
- Collaboration & Documentation:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, quality, maintenance, and design engineering).
- Prepare detailed documentation including CAD drawings, specifications, and maintenance guidelines.
- Compliance & Standards:
- Ensure all tooling solutions comply with Caterpillar’s global manufacturing standards and safety regulations.
- Support audits and quality checks related to tooling performance.
Technical Skill Sets
- Core Expertise:
- Strong proficiency in fixture design applications (CATIA, NX, Creo, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
- Hands-on experience with CNC machining, assembly processes, and tool path optimization.
- Software & Tools:
- CAD/CAM software for 3D modeling and simulation.
- PLM systems for design management.
- Familiarity with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) for fixture validation.
- Manufacturing Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of machining processes (turning, milling, grinding).
- Knowledge of assembly line tooling requirements for powertrain components.
- Experience with lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
