As a General Counsel, you'll ensure that legal services are provided for one or more major businesses/areas. We'll count on you to work closely with the Office of the Chief Legal Officer (OCLO), business and senior leaders to evaluate the legal impact of various corporate or department strategies. You’ll lead a trusted team of legal experts charged with enabling integrated and differentiating solutions for a significant portion of the Fixed Income Asset Group, including Private Placements, Private Credit, and Private Debt Funds. The team provides primary legal advice to include the development and execution of investment strategy, global market views, portfolio composition, resource allocation, priorities, and pipeline and risk / regulatory management.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP, Associate General Counsel
Key Responsibilities:
Provides proactive and reactive strategic and tactical advice/counsel to assigned business area. Provides legal subject matter expertise in support of business and operational projects. Responsible for overseeing legal guidance on operational strategic direction.
Interacts regularly with senior leaders in OCLO or the company on legal matters within area of responsibility. Has a moderate level of input into or influence on company decision-making
Creates practical and effective solutions to the most complex legal issues with no established precedent; develops creative solutions to unique legal problems. On behalf of the company or the area of expertise, has periodic interaction with persons outside of the company.
Makes recommendations on and ensures compliance with approved organization and outside counsel budgets.
Develops objectives for implementation of legal initiatives.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Typical Skills and Experience:
Education: JD from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
Licensing Requirement: Associates reporting within Nationwide’s Office of the Chief Legal Officer (OCLO) who are functioning in attorney roles must be fully licensed in accordance with OCLO policy, in good standing and in compliance with all continuing legal education requirements at all times in the state(s) in which they practice.
Experience: Ten years of legal practice required with regulatory legal experience; organizational and managerial skills; and understanding of relevant insurance, financial and investment regulations.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong verbal and written communications skills. Strong legal and analytical skills, sophisticated negotiation experience and intellectual agility. Leads and coordinates highly complex cases.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.
