About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a
Software Engineering Manager responsible for hands‑on technical leadership, delivery execution, and operational stability of enterprise API gateway platforms, including IBM DataPower and API management solutions such as Apigee.
This role manages a team of software engineers, provides deep technical guidance, and ensures API and integration solutions are delivered securely, reliably, and in compliance with enterprise architecture and security standards. The manager partners closely with architects, security teams, infrastructure teams, and CIO application teams to support platform modernization and day‑to‑day operations.
In this role, you will:
- Provide hands‑on technical leadership for IBM DataPower and API gateway implementations, including design reviews, configuration guidance, and production support
- Guide engineers through complex DataPower and API gateway troubleshooting, performance tuning, and incident resolution
- Own end‑to‑end delivery of DataPower and API gateway initiatives, from intake through deployment and stabilization
- Ensure adherence to SDLC controls, testing standards, CI/CD processes, and release gates
- Partner with infrastructure, network, and security teams to ensure stable, resilient, and compliant platform operations
- Ensure APIs and gateway services comply with enterprise security standards, including OAuth, certificates, TLS, and network security controls
- Support audit, risk, and regulatory activities by ensuring applications have sufficient controls implemented and documented
- Directly manage and mentor software engineers and technical leads, providing coaching on design quality, operational excellence, and platform standards
- Conduct regular technical reviews, performance feedback, and skill development planning
- Foster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Collaborate with CIO application teams, architects, and product owners to deliver API gateway solutions aligned with business needs
- Communicate delivery status, risks, and dependencies clearly to leadership and partner teams
- Proactively escalate technical or delivery risks with data‑driven recommendations
- Manage allocation of people and financial resources for technology engineering including career development and performance management for engineers and managers on the team
- Hire, mentor and guide talent development of direct reports to build the skills required to effectively design and deliver innovative solutions for the supported product areas/products
Required Qualifications:
- 4+ years of overall software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through experience, education, training, or military service
- 4+ years of development or managing IBM DataPower or similar API products experience, including development, solutioning, and production support
- 2+ years of experience with messaging and integration technologies, such as IBM MQ and Kafka, integrated with DataPower
- 2+ years of experience working with network components, including load balancers, firewalls, and proxies
- 2+ years of Leadership experience
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience leading or supporting DataPower modernization and migration initiatives, including migration of eligible APIs to Apigee (OPDK or Hybrid) or similar as part of enterprise modernization programs
- Experience supporting high‑throughput, low‑latency, or regulated API workloads, including PCI or partner integrations, in large enterprise environments
- Working knowledge of API lifecycle governance, including design standards, security enforcement, inventory management, and compliance controls across large API portfolios
- Strong Agile experience with ownership of L1/L2 products within the organization’s Product Operating Model, driving alignment across strategy, delivery teams, and governance.
- Experience using automation and AI-driven tools to accelerate API delivery is a plus
- Prior experience in financial services or similarly regulated industries is a plus
