Job Description Summary
As Lead Engineer – Titanium specialist, you will be a key member of the Avio Aero Engineering Material Systems team. You will lead and support Materials and Processes related activities for gearbox products, making sound engineering decisions within your area of responsibility.
In this role you will integrate and develop Materials and Process solutions that meet business needs across the organization, manage complex technical issues within your functional area of expertise, contribute to long-term technology and product planning and to the overall business strategy.
You will partner and work with internal teams across various engineering departments, sourcing, quality, and manufacturing, as well as with external suppliers. You will leverage your deep expertise in titanium alloys to ensure safe, reliable, and robust designs that meet demanding aerospace program requirements in terms of safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
Provide technical and program leadership on complex issues related to titanium alloys, including alloy selection, process routes, and qualification for gearbox applications.
Define and optimize materials and special processes for titanium components, including melting routes, forging and heat treatment cycles, machining, surface treatments, etching and NDT, ensuring compliance with internal and customer specifications.
Interface and collaborate with Design Engineering, Global Research & Supply Chain to establish requirements for materials and special processes, including material characterization, mechanical properties, heat treatment, non-destructive testing and inspection criteria to ensure proper component quality.
Act as subject matter expert on titanium metallurgy, microstructure–property relationships, mechanical behavior, and their impact on design allowable.
Support and lead industrialization of titanium components, working closely with manufacturing engineers and suppliers to develop robust processes, solve shop issues, and reduce scrap and rework.
Lead or support field events and failure investigations related to titanium material issues, conducting root cause analyses and defining corrective and preventive actions.
Develop, maintain, and interpret material, process, and inspection specifications and standards for titanium alloys; ensure alignment with GE Aerospace and customer requirements.
Develop a strong understanding of the impact of material and process quality on final product performance and drive improvements in process capability and product robustness.
Establish a collaborative network with global Engineering Material Systems experts.
Communicate significant developments risks, and opportunities to leadership and support decisions on investments, technology roadmaps, and growth initiatives in the titanium domain.
Challenge current processes and practices based on your experience to meet program needs, including schedule, cost, and yield, while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and technical direction to Engineering Material Systems team members to support their growth and build depth in titanium domain.
Support and lead collaborative cross-functional teams (materials, design, manufacturing) to reach the technical and manufacturing maturity (TRL/MRL) of advanced methods for titanium.
Qualifications/Requirements
Master’s degree in Material Science, Chemical, Mechanical, or Aeronautic Engineering from an accredited university.
Proven experience in titanium alloys in an industrial or R&D context, including exposure to alloy metallurgy and processing.
Solid technical skills and hands-on experience in the Materials and Processes field.
Relevant experience in a similar position and/or in a complex industrial environment.
Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment with multiple stakeholders.
Solid program and project management skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
Fluency in Italian and English (both written and verbal).
Proven application of Lean / Six Sigma methodologies.
Work Visa, in accordance with local regulation, is required.
Desired Characteristics
PhD in Materials Science or related disciplines, with focus on titanium alloys.
Experience in an engine system-related role.
Green belt or Black Belt certification.
Familiarity with engineering and quality system tools such as engineering drawings, standards, specifications.
Experience working in international or cross-cultural engineering teams.
Fast in action but with detailed technical review and good documentation.
