The Building Construction Products Division (BCP) has an opportunity for an Engineering Project Team Leader position based at the Clayton Machine Development Center (CMDC) or Sanford, North Carolina.
What you’ll do
The Engineering Project Team Leader will have responsibility for leading project teams in Continuous Product Improvement (CPI), Key Strategic and High Priority Projects and Cost Reduction initiatives to address business challenges and opportunities in areas of emissions, engines, engine installation on a global basis. In this position, the successful candidate will be required to work in close collaboration with Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD)’s CPI Team, BCP’s Product Support Teams and Engine System Team Colleagues to drive continuous field product quality improvement and warranty reduction by addressing high customer pain issues across all BCP engine systems. Leveraging this CPI knowledge, this position will also interact closely with the NPI (New Product Introduction) programs to help assess carry-over risk of new products being designed and utilize NPI development phased to validate fixes for CPI issues. The role will require program leadership experience and provide significant product management leadership exposure. The successful candidate will also be adept at establishing and growing relationships throughout other divisions within Caterpillar to leverage best CPI strategies and practices to employ within BCP.
You will be accountable for:
- Providing strategic vision and leadership for Key Strategic and High Priority Projects and Cost Reduction initiatives to address business challenges on a global basis.
- Prioritize programs and daily activities based on customer value, business impact, technical risks, and overall timelines.
- Be a model for high quality, high velocity technical achievements while also coordinating, aligning, and leveraging enterprise strategies and investments.
- Identify, track and communicate industry developments and trends to both technical and commercial teams.
- Develop strong relationships with product groups, system engineering, commercial teams, test and validation, and enterprise partners.
- Ownership of the BCP engine system team Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) process including governance execution and process improvement.
- Prioritize existing CPI project list based on warranty spend, customer pain and business impact.
- Lead collaboration with BCP product support team and IPSD to ensure visibility and alignment of CPI projects and priorities for each product group globally.
- Monitor warranty data across products to look for emerging issues and collaborate with IPSD to gain alignment and drive action.
- Provide strategic vision, leadership and common approach in working with IPSD to devise a methodology for low volume failures across all machine product lines.
- Develop strong relationships with IPSD, product support teams, system engineering and category team.
- Coach and Mentor system engineering to grow a highly independent, deep technical expertise within the CPI space.
To be successful in this role, you must bring (Basic Qualifications):
- Degree: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science, or other accredited engineering curriculum.
- Technical Excellence: Knowledge of Emission Regulations, Engine design / development and installation within multiple applications; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
- Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a design, development, manufacturing or product management environment.
- Products and Services: Knowledge of major products and services and product and service groups; ability to apply knowledge of product and service appropriately to diverse situations.
- Influencing Through Expertise: Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.
- Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.
- Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
- Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.

- Experience with quality process controls in components and/or products.

- Proven experience of coaching, motivating, and developing a team.
- Ability to identify and create value that delivers a high return on investment for customers.
- Ability to leverage enterprise investments and align with corporate strategies.
- Previous and direct experience with quality systems, engine design/instillation and development experience.
- Attention to details and the bigger picture with ability to drive teams to achieve key timeline / milestone decisions.
- Technical validation experience (DFMEA, DOE)
- Six Sigma Black Belt – DMAIC
- Data analytics experience (Power Bi, Tableau, etc.)

- Location: Clayton, NC or Sanford, NC
- Travel: 10-25% of travel is expected (domestic and international)

Summary Pay Range:
$128,470.00 - $192,710.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
