Job Summary:
The Quality & Safety Specialist I supports quality assurance and safety programs by applying foundational quality systems, inspection methods, and safety principles to ensure compliance with contract and regulatory requirements. This role contributes to workplace safety, product quality, and operational reliability through inspections, reporting, and corrective action support. Working under direct supervision, the specialist performs routine assignments while developing core professional competencies.
The position supports the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Safety Branch and plays an important role in safety inspections, training, documentation, and data management.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Using Safety Branch databases, delete records, modify and create windows, generate and modify printouts, and perform basic programming.
- Assisting the Hazardous Material Control and Management (HMC&M) staff in the preparation of inventories, reports, letters, memoranda, procedure guidelines, and all other miscellaneous typing needs as assigned.
- Typing reports, memoranda, correspondence, and tabular material from handwritten or rough drafts per the Navy Correspondence Manual and instructions from the Branch Head.
- Conducting formal inspections of NRL facilities to identify and evaluate workplace hazards and makes recommendations for their abatement.
- Selecting material for, preparing, and presenting Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) education and training programs for both technical and motivational subjects, for managers, supervisors and employees at NRL.
- Assisting other industrial hygienists and SOH specialists in developing study plans for facilities to be visited based upon knowledge of prior surveys, research and support operations, industrial operations, and their associated health hazards.
- Drafting technical bulletins and procedures for guidance of NRL personnel, requiring research into various technical publications and coordination with related occupational health professionals, such as medical officers.
- Assisting in the planning and execution of Safety events, such as the Safety Fair, Family Day, etc.
- Assist with scheduling and tracking medical monitoring appointments for staff in accordance with safety program requirements.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Quality, Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field OR equivalent (8 years) work experience in lieu of a degree.
- Entry‑level professional experience supporting quality assurance, safety, or inspection activities in an industrial, laboratory, or facilities environment.
- Experience preparing technical reports, correspondence, or inspection documentation in accordance with formal standards or manuals.
- U.S. Citizen. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active or prior Secret security clearance.
- Experience supporting safety, occupational health, or industrial hygiene programs within a research, laboratory, or government facility environment.
- Experience working with safety or quality databases, record management systems, or inspection tracking tools.
Work Location: Onsite customer location - Washington, DC.
Compensation: $65,090.00 - $97,635.00. The salary range posted is for Maryland locations. The offered rate will be based on the contract affordability, the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or experience, and in consideration of internal parity.
