Lead Welder – Field Fabrication & Structural Erection

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Welder to oversee and perform field fabrication and structural steel erection. This role requires expertise in welding, blueprint reading, and leading field crews to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient completion of projects. The Lead Welder will work on-site, fabricating steel components as needed and assisting in the erection of buildings, ensuring all work meets industry standards and company quality expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform and oversee structural welding and field fabrication as required.
- Lead and coordinate welding and erection crews, ensuring efficiency and safety.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and welding symbols to complete tasks accurately.
- Ensure all welding and structural connections meet AWS D1.1 standards and project specifications.
- Operate welding equipment, torches, grinders, and other tools necessary for field fabrication.
- Inspect welds and structures for quality assurance, making necessary corrections as needed.
- Assist in rigging, bolting, and aligning structural members during building erection.
- Maintain a safe work environment, adhering to OSHA and company safety regulations.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and other trades on-site.
- Train and mentor less experienced welders and crew members.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in welding, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- AWS Certified Welder (Preferred) or ability to pass company-administered weld test.
- Proficiency in SMAW (Stick), FCAW (Flux Core), and MIG welding techniques.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication, erection, and bolted connections.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and technical drawings.
- Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and ability to enforce job site safety protocols.
- Experience operating forklifts, aerial lifts, and other construction equipment (Certifications preferred).
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, and perform physical labor in various weather conditions.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- NCCER certification or other welding/ironworking credentials.
- Prior experience in commercial or industrial steel erection.
- Familiarity with rigging and crane signaling.
