The Role
The Senior Manager of Tax Transformation and Innovation - Indirect Tax Automation is responsible for managing comprehensive tax transformation initiatives within client tax organizations. The valued team member leads the evaluation, selection, and implementation of tax determination engines for clients transforming their indirect tax operations. This is a technical role focused on delivering high-quality advisory work on tax automation solutions specifically related to sales, use and excise taxes automation.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct indirect tax process assessment and identify automation opportunities across sales tax, VAT/GST, and related tax domains.
- Evaluate tax determination engine vendors (Vertex, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, Avalara, etc.) to assess fit against client requirements, complex tax scenarios, and existing ERP set-up and transaction flows.
- Lead vendor selection process including RFP development, demonstrations, accuracy testing, and business case development.
- Perform capability assessment across a series of vendors in order to recommend a solution set that fits into client corporate technology strategies.
- Design tax engine implementation strategies including data setup, configuration approach, system integration, and testing plans.
- Develop detailed requirements documentation and technical specifications for tax engine implementation.
- Create and manage an implementation roadmap that outlines key milestones, timelines, and resource requirements
- Manage proof-of-concept projects to validate tax engine accuracy and functionality.
- Provide technical guidance during contract negotiations with vendors.
- Lead change management efforts to ensure smooth adoption of new processes and technologies, including communication, training, and support for impacted teams
- Provide insights on the design of the indirect tax organization including roles, responsibilities, and reporting lines for purposes of advisory work in tax function redesigns or pre- and post-acquisition tax function integration support
- Deliver insights on tax as a broader component of finance operations, including in Procure-to-Pay (P2P), Order-to-Cash (OTC), and Record-to-Report (RTR) processes, to ensure seamless integration and alignment with tax transformation initiatives
The Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- Advanced certifications highly preferred including: Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Project Management Professional (PMP), or industry-specific vendor certifications (Thomson Reuters Certified Implementer, Vertex Certified Implementer, SAP or Oracle certification).
- Minimum 8 years of professional experience in indirect tax, including involvement and/or oversight of tax determination engine implementations, tax function transformations, and/or tax technology advisory engagements.
- Expert knowledge of indirect tax (sales tax, VAT/GST, excise tax) compliance and operations.
- Deep expertise in tax determination engine technology and capabilities (Vertex, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, Avalara, etc.).
- Strong technical assessment skills for evaluating tax engines and vendor solutions.
- Advanced tax rule configuration and system validation expertise.
- Ability to assess complex indirect tax scenarios and map requirements to technology solutions.
- Project management skills with ability to coordinate cross-functional teams.
- Business case development and ROI analysis capabilities.
- Strong communication skills for technical and business audiences.
- Ability to work effectively with clients and vendors throughout implementation.
Compensation and Benefits
Our firm offers a competitive base salary and comprehensive benefits package designed to support the well-being, growth, and long-term success of our people. Salary Range: For individuals hired to work in New York City, the expected salary range for this role is $184,000 to $233,600. Actual compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and skill set.
Benefits: Employees (and their families) are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance coverage. Employees may enroll in the firm’s 401(k) plan upon hire.
