The principal reason for this position is to provide engineering and technical support to NASA-sponsored flight and ground sensorimotor research and operations conducted by the Neurosciences Laboratory. The Neurosciences Laboratory is a component of the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division, which is responsible for the performance of biomedical research focused on: 1) understanding the normal human response to space flight, and 2) developing, testing, and delivering countermeasures to those untoward responses that may affect crew health, safety, and/or performance during or after space flight missions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures.
Responsible for completing all assigned training.
Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices.
Application of engineering principles and practice of related specialties.
Collect, reduce, collate, analyze, and archive operational, flight, flight analog, and ground data.
Analyze experimental data and recommend modifications to analysis procedures and analytical methods; develop and modify software for data reduction and analysis.
Operate specialized equipment used in tests on human subjects.
Operate data acquisition systems during hardware verification, science verification, and actual data acquisition from human subjects.
Prepare and update appropriate documentation of software and hardware development activities.
Design and develop software and hardware for data collection and testing.
For potential acquisition, contact vendors for information, and initiate procurement.
Assist in the preparation of human research protocols, technical reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
Participate in test readiness reviews and meetings related to the development and implementation of human research protocols, detailed test plans, etc.
Contribute to the formulation and documentation of standard procedures in the laboratory.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required: Bachelor’s Degree plus 5+ years of experience; or master’s degree plus 0-2 years of experience; or equivalent experience in biomedical or mechanical engineering, or a closely allied field. The incumbent must be skilled in the evaluation and integration of biomechanical instrumentation intended for use with human subjects. The incumbent must be able to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria and use judgment to make decisions to provide engineering solutions to problems. Knowledge of human physiology to understand biomedical experiments designed to characterize the human adaptive response to space flight and space flight analogs is also a requirement. Previous experience working with test subjects is also required. Incumbent must have the ability to work effectively both in small teams and independently; and work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting and where there are frequently divergent or competing goals for the project implementation and outcome.
Desired: 1) Experience with biomedical measures, real-time data acquisition systems, and signal processing; 2) Experience with mechanical design and conducting load analyses for safety reviews is desired.
SKILLS/TRAINING
Required: Advanced PC Skills in Microsoft Office products are required. The incumbent is expected to participate as a member of a research team working closely with principal investigators, astronauts, subjects, support scientists, and other engineers. Communication skills must be excellent. The incumbent must develop a thorough knowledge of NASA's and Wyle's policies and procedures governing the use of human test subjects. Previous experience with Matlab and LabView programming is required.
Desired: Proficiency with Solid Works is desired for mechanical design layout.
