Job Description We are seeking an Engineer I to support the Optical Testing Facility (OTF), performing and owning spectral and optical measurements while also applying engineering-level analysis to the data generated. You will work with optical
components integrated into complex space-based and airborne sensors for NASA, commercial, and DoW markets. This role covers the full scope of lab measurement work — spectrophotometry, FTIR, handling, and inspection — plus the engineering analysis, documentation, and design interpretation that sits above it. We're looking for someone with a conceptual grasp of optical measurement principles and the aptitude to quickly build hands-on proficiency, who can also interpret results against design intent, identify anomalies, and feed findings back to the broader engineering team.

What You’ll Do: - Optical Test Laboratory & Spectral Measurements:
- Perform spectral transmission and reflectance measurements of optical components and coatings using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometers.
- Prepare samples, configure measurement fixtures, and set up instruments for spectral testing, including new and non-standard configurations.
- Run calibration checks and reference standards to verify instrument performance before measurements.
- Record, reduce, and analyze measurement data using engineering-level analysis techniques and software.
- Compare measured spectral data against component specifications; independently assess out-of-family results and determine root cause.
- Operate additional optical measurement equipment, for example, measuring microscopes, profilometers, interferometers, and scatterometers.
- Maintain and calibrate the optical test laboratory and associated equipment, including troubleshooting system-level, process-level, and instrument-level issues.
- Optical Handling, Inspection & Cleaning:
- Handle delicate optical components per company processes, maintaining cleanliness and contamination control standards.
- Conduct optical inspection per company processes and commercial standards, including Scratch-Dig measurements and dimensional measurements.
- Perform cleaning of optical components per company processes and commercial standards.
- Review vendor data packages for incoming optical components and disposition non-conformances.
- Engineering Analysis & Design Interpretation:
- Apply engineering-level analysis to spectral, wavefront, and dimensional data to assess performance against design requirements and specifications.
- Interpret interferometric wavefront error data, including Zernike decomposition, to evaluate optical performance and support alignment convergence.
- Support stray light analysis using scatterometry and BRDF measurements collected in the lab.
- Develop and refine test procedures, measurement setups, and acceptance criteria for new or evolving optical characterization needs.
- Read and interpret optical component and assembly drawings and specifications, including GD&T callouts, to guide test planning and disposition decisions.
- Support root cause analysis for measurement anomalies, coating non-conformances, and out-of-family results; recommend corrective actions.
- Contribute engineering input to alignment budgets and error analyses in coordination with senior engineers and technologists.
- Documentation & Teamwork:
- Produce data packages, technical reports, and performance summaries using Microsoft Office tools and custom systems.
- Input required information into electronic build records in accordance with company processes.
- Author and maintain test procedures, measurement work instructions, and systems engineering reports, ensuring documentation reflects current best practices.
- Present technical findings, anomaly dispositions, and measurement results to engineers, technologists, and program leadership.
- Work in a collaborative environment with optics personnel, engineers, and technicians to test and characterize components for state-of-the-art optical systems.
- Participate in design reviews and technical exchanges with optical, mechanical, and systems engineering teams.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions: - Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
- May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
- May access other facilities in various weather conditions.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills - BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required.
- Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- Optical, physics, chemistry, or materials laboratory exposure through coursework, research, or work experience.
- Aptitude and care for handling delicate components or samples requiring cleanliness and precision.
- Coursework, internship, co-op, or research experience involving optical systems, optical measurement, or optical design.
- Experience following and developing detailed written procedures and recording and analyzing measurement data.
- Solid conceptual understanding of spectral measurement principles (transmission, reflectance, wavelength ranges) and aptitude to quickly develop hands-on proficiency with spectrophotometers and FTIR spectrometers.
- Working knowledge of optical engineering fundamentals, including geometric and physical optics.
- Ability to independently analyze measurement data and interpret results against engineering specifications.
- Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity for working with delicate optical and opto-mechanical hardware.
- Ability to read and interpret optical component drawings and specifications, including GD&T callouts.
- Excellent attention to detail and practice following detailed processes and procedures with consistency and rigor.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge and use of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to run and apply technical analysis software for data reduction and reporting.
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work with many different disciplines, including technicians, technologists, and engineers.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to present technical findings clearly to engineers and program leadership.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills - Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
- Familiarity with UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometers (e.g., PerkinElmer Lambda, Cary, or equivalent) through coursework, research, or work exposure.
- Familiarity with FTIR spectrometers (e.g., Thermo Nicolet, Bruker, or equivalent) through coursework, research, or work exposure.
- Experience measuring optical coatings, filters, or witness samples. Familiarity with interferometric wavefront analysis and Zernike decomposition.
- Experience with laser or optical alignment, including free-space and cage-mount optical assemblies, beam propagation, and alignment diagnostics.
- Experience with optical design and analysis software (e.g., Zemax, Code V, or equivalent).
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools for data analysis and instrument control. Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software, including design for 3D printing or other rapid prototyping methods.
- Familiarity with precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers) and general machine shop equipment.
- Experience working in cleanroom environments.
- Space-based or airborne optical system experience.
- Electronics aptitude.
- Willingness and ability to acquire a security clearance.
Pay InformationFull-Time Salary Range: $64926 - $110374
