The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Description
The Claims Specialist I - Total Loss will be assisting customers/claimants who have been involved in a total loss vehicle accident by investigating the facts of loss, explaining the claims process, and making decisions about coverage, reserves, actual cash value, claim payments and referrals. They will be negotiating and settling claims with first- and third-party claimants. They will also handle more complex total loss claims, including those involving losses that more difficult to evaluate (construction equipment, unique losses, etc.). They should be providing timely and high-quality service to achieve a positive customer experience and the best possible outcome on every claim.
Responsibilities:
- Interacts with customers/claimants to obtain facts, explain the coverage and claims process, set expectations and provide high quality service to achieve a positive customer experience.
- Performs a thorough coverage analysis to review policy and endorsement language specific to a total loss, giving consideration to definitions, exclusions, limits to exposures, etc.
- Plans and conducts investigation to determine liability and damages use the claim facts to identify when a recorded interview should be obtained, such as when liability or damages are undetermined, subrogation potential exists, or in case of possible fraud or misrepresentation.
- Negotiates and settles claims with first- and third-party claimants in accordance with settlement authority, policy provisions, applicable law and customer service standards.
- Obtains vehicle evaluation after it is deemed a total loss and applies knowledge and judgment to determine the actual cash value (ACV) based on options, condition ratings and other considerations.
- Establishes and maintains reserves based on the most probable outcome ' i.e., the estimate of the ultimate financial cost to resolve a claim whether through settlement or other adjudication.
- Uses claim systems to properly document files (including initial resolution strategy, evaluation, negotiations, etc.), manage a diary and issue payments.
- Transfers title for theft-related vehicles according to state specific requirements retains and stores documents and original vehicle related equipment (including keys) in a separate package from the claim file.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of auto physical damage claims, commercial auto coverage; total loss claims handling procedures, and applicable laws
- Ability to negotiate; analyze/solve problems; plan/organize work; express facts clearly in writing and verbally; and communicate effectively
- Other capabilities include interpersonal skills, listening skills, tact, empathy, attention to detail, and drive for results
- Knowledge, skills, and capabilities normally acquired through a bachelor's degree (or equivalent), completion of the formal training program, and at least 2 years of experience
- State license required
- Pursuing continuing education courses leading to industry certifications (e.g., AEI, IIA, CPCU)
