We are adding a Building Estimator to our Kiewit Industrial organization to support our Oil/Gas and Petrochemical market, based in our Houston office in the energy corridor. In this role, you will work in with both engineering and construction teams, reviewing, analyzing & interpreting contract documents (specifications, drawings, and reference information) to develop comprehensive cost estimates for various Industrial facilities. You will be involved in assembling estimates with different execution methodologies (Design-bid-build, design/build, EPC) and will create subcontract bid packages for use in obtaining quotes from vendors to support the building construction. This position is based out of our office in Lenexa, KS.
Responsibilities
- Use recognized engineering techniques and procedures to conduct estimates and adhere to standard company policy and perform all classes of estimates (indicative, detailed, etc) based on the specific estimate timeline and requirements.
- Estimate buildings with different execution methodologies (design-bid-build, design-build) as Kiewit strategically chooses to be the design entity on certain buildings.
- Review, analyze and interpret owner documents (RFP, drawings, specifications, and reference information) to develop detailed, comprehensive cost estimates.
- Create subcontract bid packages for use in obtaining quotes.
- Understand what design deliverables are required from each discipline in order to provide the level of estimate accuracy required.
- Review architectural drawings and specifications for building-related lighting, power, HVAC, and plumbing systems that will be used in deliverable (bid) packages sent to subcontractors for bidding.
- Understand industry best practices, project/ construction sequencing, geographical challenges, etc. and implement on each estimate.
- Consult with estimate team on challenges discovered during bid preparation, design, rates, schedules, etc.
- Complete technical bid evaluation reviews during the bid period and determine the practicality of submittals.
- Communicate critical issues and estimate assumptions to Estimate Management as they arise to ensure proper awareness and limit late changes.
- Schedule, prepare for, and participate in estimate reviews and presentations to department heads and project management.
- Understand past project cost data for benchmarking, and monitor key estimating metrics that are reviewed by Senior Management and ensure that the estimate falls within the accepted boundaries. Be able to explain any metrics that my fall outside these accepted boundaries.
- Stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new products, methods, and procedures in the industry.
- Work with engineering team to prepare value engineering solutions related to cost, schedule, and Owner benefits.
- Facilitate Cross-Discipline Communication.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering (preferred. If no degree, a minimum of 7 years in construction of buildings, with experience in estimating functions.
2+ years estimating experience in building construction, design, or subcontract management. Experience with standard practices for building cost estimation (Class 1-5).
Understanding of Metal Building Structures for industrial projects, and basic understanding of building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system, building codes and requirements.
Familiar and confident in understanding the workflow required to estimate, bid and construct buildings in an Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) and Design-Build environment.
Experience with execution of all building project design phases from concept to construction.
Knowledge of construction means and methods, costs and techniques, construction safety and current Federal & OSHA Requirements.
Ability to read, analyze and identify discrepancies on engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Experience with the value engineering process and low cost alternative recommendations as they relate to project budgets and associated construction costs.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Bluebeam and Navisworks. Experience with InEight Estimate (HardDollar) preferred.
Exceptionally strong attention to detail, oral and written communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Highly motivated, with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative. Team player with the ability to work independently to meet deadlines, goals and objectives.
