Job Description:
We are seeking a Sr Database Engineer to support the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In this role, you will administer and enhance existing database service offerings to support critical business processes and ongoing scientific research. You will work closely with other innovative and savvy people to collaborate with product owners and engineer new database offerings, using the latest technologies to improve delivery time and reduce operational maintenance.
We’ll want you to think beyond just database services and contribute to other areas of our hosting environment as we focus on continued modernization efforts. We’ll want to hear your opinion. You’ll help automate and streamline our operations and processes and further the adoption of DevOps best practices.

How a Database Engineer Will Make an Impact:
- Collaborating with product owners to develop new or modify existing PowerShell scripts to automate database services, such as configuration of new database instances, patching, and upgrades
- Troubleshooting issues that impact services and actively responding to alerts and performance trends
- Responding to service requests, such as complicated product deployment efforts that require coordination to modify data and database hosting configurations
- Joining sprint or ad hoc meetings to discuss requirements for products and brainstorm new technical solutions
- Attending a daily stand-up meeting to report your accomplishments, plans for the day, and any roadblocks you encountered
- Working closely with other Database and System Engineers to enhance the experience for delivering infrastructure services and developing custom products by introducing techniques, such as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and containerized or serverless workloads
- Present on best practices, new technologies, and ways you approached and solved challenging technical issues.
What You'll Need to Succeed:
Education: Technical Training, Certification(s) or Degree
Required Experience: Eight years of related experience
Required Technical Skills:
- Minimum of eight years’ experience with all aspects of Database Administration
- Extensive experience managing, configuring, and patching Microsoft SQL server hosted on Windows systems in a high availability environment
- Minimum of eight years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server
- Minimum of two years of experience with AWS, specifically with relational database services.
- Good understanding of scripting languages, such as PowerShell
- Experience analyzing solutions components, understanding systems integration challenges, and identifying technology gaps in product designs that must be resolved to reach future performance targets and functionality requirements
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain a NIH Public Trust
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with other relational and graphing databases, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Neo4j
- Experience with programming languages, such as PHP, Python, Perl, and/or Ruby
- Experience migrating on-prem MS SQL servers to AWS
- Developing and hosting AWS database solutions.
- Experience with Datadog database monitoring and performance tuning
- Experience with a variety of technologies to develop, maintain, and deploy infrastructure services, such as continuous deployment and continuous integration services, code repositories, and security vulnerability identification and protection. Example technologies include Ansible, Datadog, Ideara, GitHub, GoCD
Location: This position is remote. However you must be able to commute to the Rockville, MD client site should circumstances change.

The likely salary range for this position is $134,597 - $149,500. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
