The EPMO Capability Lead is responsible for defining, documenting, implementing, and continuously improving enterprise portfolio management processes, standards, and tools. This role serves as the primary owner of assigned EPMO capabilities and works collaboratively with business and functional partners to design practical, scalable processes that enable consistent execution across the organization.
The Capability Lead develops and maintains the EPMO process architecture, templates, methodologies, and DIY Kit resources. The role also serves as a coach and advisor to initiative leaders, helping teams successfully apply EPMO standards while building organizational capability and self-sufficiency.
This position operates as a facilitator, consultant, and capability builder who enables effective execution through clear processes, practical guidance, and continuous improvement.
What will the employee be doing?
Process Ownership & Design:
- Lead the definition, documentation, implementation, and continuous improvement of EPMO processes, frameworks, and standards.
- Partner with stakeholders across business and functional areas to identify process requirements, pain points, and improvement opportunities.
- Facilitate cross-functional workshops to design, validate, and gain alignment on future-state processes.
- Establish process governance, decision rights, inputs, outputs, controls, and success measures.
- Ensure processes align with enterprise strategy, portfolio governance, risk management, and organizational objectives.
- Develop process documentation including workflows, procedures, roles and responsibilities, guidelines, and supporting materials.
Template & Standards Management
- Own the development and maintenance of the EPMO template library.
- Create and enhance standard deliverables including charters, business cases, schedules, status reports, RAID logs, benefits plans, governance materials, and closeout artifacts.
- Ensure templates are practical, intuitive, and support consistent execution across the enterprise.
- Establish version control, publishing standards, and lifecycle management for EPMO artifacts.
- Gather feedback from users and incorporate continuous improvements into templates and standards.
DIY Kit Ownership
- Serve as the owner for the EPMO DIY Kit.
- Maintain guidance documents, playbooks, job aids, examples, and reference materials.
- Ensure DIY Kit content remains current, relevant, and aligned to approved processes and standards.
- Develop new resources to address emerging organizational needs.
- Monitor adoption and effectiveness of DIY Kit resources and implement improvements as needed.
- Provide coaching, consulting, and advisory support to initiative leaders leveraging the DIY Kit.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Build strong partnerships with business units, technology teams, finance, risk, compliance, and organizational change management functions.
- Act as a bridge between process owners, practitioners, and leadership teams.
- Facilitate consensus among stakeholders on process decisions and prioritization.
- Gather and incorporate stakeholder feedback to improve EPMO products and services.
Continuous Improvement and Capability Development
- Measure adoption, quality, effectiveness, and user satisfaction of EPMO processes and tools.
- Recommend and implement enhancements to methodologies, tooling, and governance practices.
- Support maturity improvement initiatives across portfolio, program, and project management disciplines.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Management, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in portfolio, program, project management, process improvement, business operations, or related disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience developing business processes, operating models, standards, or governance frameworks.
- Experience facilitating cross-functional collaboration and driving organizational alignment.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Experience creating executive-ready materials, templates, job aids, and process documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMP, PgMP, PfMP, Lean, Six Sigma, Prosci, or related certification.
- Experience within an EPMO, PMO, or Business Transformation function.
- Experience designing self-service toolkits, knowledge management systems, or learning resources.
- Familiarity with portfolio management, governance, and benefits realization frameworks.
- Experience with PPM and collaboration tools such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Azure DevOps, and portfolio management platforms.
