What will you do?
The Applications Engineer will support the Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) and AMPRO Center of Excellence by overseeing advanced engineering processes, including subtractive manufacturing, metrology/NDT, and IoT 4.0 activities. This role involves programming and operating complex CNC machinery, leading the implementation of new technologies, and ensuring project compliance with standards such as ITAR and ISO. The Applications Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive the successful execution of projects, while maintaining detailed documentation and technical process oversight.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Program and assist in set-up and operation of CNC equipment including but not limited to multi-axis milling machines, mill/turn machines, dual spindle lathes, tool pre-setters, etc.
- Serve as technical lead of implementation of tooling, work-holding, and CNC technologies
- Implement new and emerging technology into existing or upcoming CMA projects.
- Work cross function with the CMA team and machinist to ensure the successful execution of a wide range of subtractive manufacturing and inspection activities
- Ensure CMA project compliance with data privacy and standard requirements including ITAR, ISO, ANSI, etc.
- Create detailed and exhaustive documentation for technical processes and procedures
- Track project CNC technical data
- Support activities for new and existing projects
- Attend onsite and offsite stakeholder meetings as required
- Performs other related duties as required

What do you offer?
- An associate’s degree or diploma in Precision Machining Technology or equivalent work experience required
- Must have a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in setting up complex CNC operations
- Experience in ITAR and ISO work environment preferred
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products
- Extensive working knowledge of precision machining
- Extensive cutting tool applications and material properties knowledge
- Knowledge of various additive manufacturing, dimensional inspection and NDT processes
- Extensive CNC experience including multi-axis machining, dual spindle lathes, mill/turn, etc. required
- Extensive knowledge of work holding techniques and fixture design
- Knowledge of ancillary machining processes including EDM, Grinding
- Understanding of how to implement and conduct pre, in, and post process inspection methods through macro variable programming
- Extensive CNC programming experience required
- Extensive CAD/CAM experience and knowledge required
- Experience with SPC, process monitoring and data collection systems preferred
- Must demonstrate good communication skills, oral and written.
- Must be customer service oriented and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must be detail-oriented, organized, and possess the ability to multi-task and troubleshoot in a multi-faceted work environment.
- Must be able to work effectively in a team-oriented work environment
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel throughout Virginia as well as occasional out-of-state trips
