Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS), Space Mission Systems team seeks a Command and Data Handling Engineer (C&DH) to develop and manage Telemetry and Command Digital (TCD or T&C) Subsystems for Boeing satellite and satellite autonomy programs.
C&DH Subsystem engineering assignments include requirements definition and flow down, systems design and analysis, systems integration, test, and verification. You will resolve technical issues and ensure hardware and software are flight worthy prior to delivery. You will work with management and experts across multiple disciplines including subsystem engineering, software architecture, software validation, Communications Security (COMSEC), electronic hardware testing, spacecraft level testing, and end to end system engineering.
Position Responsibilities:
- Gather, define, and document system level requirements to support flight control and mission or trajectory requirements definition.
- Provide technical, cost, and schedule status to program and function. Participate and support with cost and schedule reduction initiatives.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive subsystem specifications and unit specs with REA support.
- Work on subsystem-to-subsystem interface requirements and C&DH subsystem hardware Subcontract/Contract Data Requirements List (SDRLs/CDRLs).
- Create and release subsystem level analyses such as traffic analysis, TM accuracy, sampling, command pacing, …
- Perform Subsystem Architecture (including Block Diagram) and technology insertion (including COMSEC Roadmap).
- Assure COMSEC implementation and CNSSP-12 compliance including cybersecurity and information assurance.
- Prepare and present C&DH subsystem design reviews (PDR, CDR, etc.) for customer and Program SEIT interface.
- Input to Spacecraft Database, FSW, and Flight ROPs.
- Lead (level 5) or participate in (level 4) C&DH Subsystem In-orbit anomaly investigations and support to COSC.
- Define and maintain satellite C&DH process writings (DMS guides).
To meet security standards and protocols, this position is 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite in El Segundo, CA.
This worksite participates in Boeing’s optional 9/80 schedule rotation. 9/80 is a rotation in which employees can work 9 hour shifts, 8 days per pay period (bi-weekly) and receive every other Friday off.
Travel may be required up to 10% of the time; domestically and internationally depending on business needs.
This position requires a current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) (U.S. Citizenship required) or requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
- 3+ years of experience applying Systems Engineering principals and Systems Integration in the Aerospace industry.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
- Experience developing solutions to complex technical problems.
- Experience working with CCSDS and IP (Internet Protocol).
- Experience working with MIL-STD-1553, SpaceWire, CAN, or Ethernet.
- Experience in MATLAB, Python, and Excel Macros.
Typical Education/Experience:
Experienced (level 3): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Lead (level 4): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Senior (level 5): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Relocation:

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
Summary Pay Range for Experienced level 3: $108,800 – $147,200
Summary Pay Range for Lead level 4: $135,150 – $182,850
Summary Pay Range for Senior level 5: $164,050 – $221,950
