HDR is seeking a qualified, experienced cultural resources specialist to join our Northwest Cultural Resources Team. In this role, the Cultural Resources Specialist 1 will support field projects and desktop reviews for projects throughout Oregon and Washington, with the possibility of occasionally assisting other HDR projects throughout the United States. The successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated applied experience in cultural resources desktop reviews, field studies, laboratory analysis, construction monitoring, and report writing. This person will be expected to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary project teams consisting of project managers and resource technical specialists to provide project support for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Washington Governor’s Executive Order 21-02, Revised Code of Washington, and Oregon Revised Statues, among others.
Projects will be primarily based throughout Washington and Oregon, with the possibility of occasionally assisting other HDR projects throughout the United States. This position includes both office tasks and fieldwork with occasional travel.
In the role of Cultural Resource Specialist I (Archaeologist), we'll count on you to:
- Work under the direction of the Cultural Resources Business Class Lead as part of a regional team of archaeologists and architectural historians and collaborate with National team leaders.
- Perform simple to complex assignments for archaeological and cultural resources projects.
- Take responsibility for records searches, survey data compilation, assessment, analysis within historic contexts, historic context development, and report writing.
- Conduct fieldwork, including pedestrian and subsurface survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring to identify and document archaeological resources for a variety of client sectors, including transportation, renewable energy/power, and water.
- Conduct research and develop cultural contexts and other writing deliverables.
- Complete site inventory forms, preliminary recommendations of eligibility, and draft reports that meet the requirements of the appropriate State Historic Preservation Office and local, state, and federal agencies.
- Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and understand the scope of the work being requested.
- Work independently on tasks, or assist other staff on larger projects.
- Travel to project locations, predominantly in Oregon and Washington, although additional nationwide travel may be requested as needed.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience conducting cultural resources surveys and data reviews in the Pacific Northwest.
- Proven ability to participate and conduct archaeological survey, testing and data recovery excavation, and construction monitoring for projects of various sizes.
- Strong oral communication skills; basic computer skills (Microsoft Office products).
- Must demonstrate knowledge of and experience with project compliance-related activities including quality assurance and reviews.
- Experience collaborating with GIS and document specialists in a team environment.
- Self-motivated, positive, flexible, team-oriented attitude with a willingness and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Other technical skills and specialties (i.e., lithic analysis, flotation, etc.) are a plus.
- Willingness to travel.
- Ability to record cultural resources in the field without any physical assistance (this could include hiking short distances in dense vegetation).
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments.
- Valid driver’s license and able to operate a vehicle day or night.
- Approximately 70% travel required.
