Purpose of Role
This role is responsible for leading the company's global privacy and data protection initiatives and providing strategic legal guidance on product development and innovation. This role requires a seasoned legal professional with deep expertise in privacy law, data protection regulations, and a strong understanding of technology-driven products. As a key member of the legal leadership team, the VP Privacy and Product will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, engineering, compliance, and security, to ensure that the company's products and services meet the highest standards of privacy and legal compliance.
Responsibility Statements
Leads the company’s response to data incidents, including managing investigations, notifications, and remediation efforts.
Advises the Executive team on privacy risks and mitigation strategies, and drive privacy-by-design principles across all business operations.
Develops, implements, and maintains the company’s global privacy and data protection strategy.
Ensures compliance with global privacy laws and regulations, including, CCPA, HIPAA, and other relevant frameworks.
Oversees the company’s privacy training programs and promotes a culture of privacy awareness and accountability.
Manages relationships with regulators, industry groups, and external stakeholders on privacy and data protection matters.
Provides strategic legal counsel on product development, from ideation through launch, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Collaborates with product teams to design and implement compliant, innovative solutions that meet customer needs and regulatory requirements.
Drafts, reviews, and negotiates complex agreements, including data processing agreements, licensing agreements, and partnership contracts.
Stays current on evolving legal trends, industry standards, and regulatory developments affecting the company’s products and services.
Manages patent attorneys on intellectual property issues related to product development, including patent, trademark, and copyright matters.
Leads cross-functional teams in conducting risk assessments and implementing risk mitigation strategies for new products and features.
Builds and leads a high-performing privacy and product counsel team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Mentors and develops team members, providing guidance on complex legal and regulatory issues.
Drives strategic initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the legal function within the company.
This position manages/supervises people.
Professional Qualifications/Experience
We are seeking a senior legal executive with a demonstrated history of successfully overseeing and managing all activities related to the development, implementation, and maintenance of privacy policies, as well as a record of success in growing and managing high performing teams. Ideally, s/he will be a proven collaborator, possessing outstanding communication skills and the ability to manage cross-functionally across large, complex organizations. Specific requirements include:
Bachelor's Degree, Doctorate Degree, Juris Doctorate Degree
10-12 years of relevant legal experience, with a strong focus on privacy law, data protection, and technology transactions
Proven track record of leadership in a global, fast-paced environment, ideally within a Fortune 500 or comparable company
Deep knowledge of global privacy regulations, data protection laws, and emerging trends in privacy technology
Experience advising on the legal aspects of product development, including software, hardware, and digital services
Strong negotiation, drafting, and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment
Must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, and have the ability to become registered in-house in the relevant state
Preferred Qualifications: Certification such as CIPP/US, CIPP/E, or CIPM and member of IAPP
