The Opportunity
The Information Security Risk Assessments team provides senior executives and other business leaders with an accurate and actionable view of information security risk, within and across the enterprise.
We are seeking an intern-level Information Security Advisor that will:
- Promote awareness and the overall efficiency of the Information Security program, requirements, and standard processes to risk owners across the enterprise.
- Support security-focused assessments of new and existing projects, technologies, and environments that will guide decision making.
- Help ensure information security risks associated with business activities are optimally identified, measured, supervised, and controlled to ultimately minimize risk to members and the workforce.
Over the course of the internship, an Information Security Advisor Intern will get an in-depth look into the key drivers, trends, and challenges facing the industry overall. Additionally, with the guidance of their manager and an assigned mentor, the Intern will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinking, technical, and communication skills vital to become a successful Information Security professional.

The internship is based at USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Interns offered full-time roles may have the opportunity to work out of one of USAA’s satellite locations.
What you'll do:
Our Info Security Risk Advisor Interns, work under direct supervision and following risk and compliance procedures and mentorship, perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support other team members, including the following tasks:
- Assists with the documentation, publication, and/or maintenance of basic Information Security governance requirements (e.g. policies and standards).
- Learns to complete repeatable methods and measurements to resolve Information Security risk.
- Performs basic security risk assessment steps.
- Assists peers on basic Information Security risk requests to guide the security direction of technical projects and initiatives.
- Assists in the response research to basic inquiries and periodic exams from internal control partners (e.g. legal, compliance, audit, risk).
- Assists process owners with testing of Information Security controls.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are optimally identified, measured, supervised, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you need to have:
To qualify, you must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2025 internship will start on May 28, 2025 and last through August 8, 2025.
- Graduation date cannot be prior to August 09, 2025
- Up to 2 years of related experience in Information Security, Information Assurance, Risk Management, Audit and/or Information Technology.
- Foundational and conceptual knowledge of function/subject area and proven application of knowledge, skills, and abilities towards work products.
- Foundational level of business acumen in the areas of business operations, risk management, industry practices and emerging trends.
What sets you apart:
- Pursuing a degree with a concentration in Cyber Security, IT Management, Engineering, or other related degree field
- Graduation date between August 2025 and July 2026
- Basic understanding of security protocols, application security, cryptography, authentication, or authorization
- Basic knowledge of applicable information security frameworks, standards, regulatory requirements, and controls.
- Awareness of NIST 800-53 and CSF
- Basic knowledge of performing information security controls assessments
- Basic knowledge of detailing information security risks, findings, and issues
- Basic knowledge of information security in cloud deployment models (e.g., SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, etc.)
- Possess (in good standing) IT or Security-related certifications or professional designation(s) (e.g., Security+, Network+, etc.)

What we offer:
Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location. The range for this position is: $23 - $34.
Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.
