The Sr. Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for the set-up, research and resolution of employee employment taxes. The Sr. Payroll Tax Specialist will be responsible for communication and customer service for tax issues and will act as a subject matter expert for these taxes.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Researching and resolving payroll tax issues
- Act as an SME for payroll tax questions and issues, troubleshoot when needed
- Partner with HR Operations to manage escalated cases related to payroll taxes, including communication directly to employees based on their individual situation, as well as outside tax vendors/organizations
- Running queries to audit the taxes for each bi-weekly payroll run, telecommuters, local withholdings, etc.
- Maintain accurate tax records within payroll system, assist in testing system tax updates before moving to live system.
- Assist with year-end review and processing of W2’s and W2c’s
- Maintain general ledger balances and manage daily wires for taxes and other payroll disbursements
- Research errors, determine root cause and make recommendations for on-going process improvements
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees
- Collaborate with HRIS, Payroll Operation, Communications and HR communities in the support of payroll operations and tax changes
- Maintain effective relationships with key internal and external customers and vendors

Required Qualifications:
- 2+ years of Microsoft Office experience - solid excel skills (use spreadsheets efficiently and frequently, and perform calculations and automation to process large volumes of data, Pivot tables, VLookups)
- 2+ years prior payroll experience
- 1+ years prior payroll tax experience
- Experience with multi-state payroll tax
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately under deadline pressure
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and balance multiple projects and payroll responsibilities simultaneously, comfortable analyzing large amounts of data, problem solving and the ability to operate in a fast-paced and highly confidential setting
Knowledge/Skills Requirements:
- Knowledge of Gross to Net Payroll and General Accounting Principles
- Working knowledge of payroll policies and procedures and federal and state statutes
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Word, Excel
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent understanding of multi-location payroll and taxes
- Solid analytical, problem solving skills, including query skills
- Solid understanding of how to build efficient operational processes
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks with hard deadlines simultaneously
- Ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
