Job Summary
Provide safe, efficient, and on-time movement of trains over an operating division. Manages on-time train performance and current movement of traffic offered by terminals and Line-Of-Road (LOR) releases. Develops short term-range tactical plans (12 - 24 hours in advance) and manages on-time train performance and current movement of traffic offered by terminals and line-of-road releases. Works closely with Trainmasters, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendents to ensure a scheduled on time railroad. Manages the system production team plan to ensure adequate time and ensures railroad recovery following service disruptions.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Notify Trainmasters, Road Foreman of Engine (RFE's), Roadmasters, and network directors about any event (e.g derailments, grade crossing accidents, fire, hurricane, flood, or other bad weather) that affects the network on the main line.
- Work with Assistant Chief Dispatchers and other Network Operations Managers to plan and notify others regarding the safe movement of high value or oversized shipments.
- Develop short range tactical and operational plans
- Plan and manage work windows
- Provide root cause analysis of all inordinate train delays to change processes or teach/train employees to avoid in the future.
- Work with crew management and locomotive distribution to ensure adequate assets
- Conduct operational observation tests (O-tests) and provide coaching and discipline to create desired behaviors
- Make decisions within budget thresholds for dead-heading crews, LOR overtime, and supplying re-crews.
- Coordinate with Assistant Chiefs, Train Dispatchers, and Network Operations Managers on adjoining divisions to prevent or correct any excessive delay to trains.
- Call in Train Dispatchers during vacancies (vacation, sick days).Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
- 3 or more years of experience in Transportation, Logistics, or Rail Operations
Equivalent Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 5 or more years of experience in Transportation, Logistics, or Rail Operations
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
- 3 or more years of experience in Dispatching experience
- 3 or more years of supervisory experience in Transportation, Logistics, or Rail Operations
Knowledge and Skills
- Railroad industry knowledge
- Knowledge of next generation dispatching and Computer Assisted Dispatching (CAD) systems
- Microsoft Office skills
- Knowledge of terminal and line of road operations, including physical layout of track on territory
- Mainframe systems skills
- Personal leadership skills
- Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements
- Knowledge of CSX operating rules

Job Requirements
- Different shifts as assigned in a 24 hour/7 days a week operation (incl working weekends)
- May be required to complete a background check
- Ability to report to work with 30 minutes advance notice
- Wear protective equipment (such as welding shields, hard hat, hearing protection)
- Work with hazardous materials on an occasional basis
- Work hours may vary in length and schedule (may include a non-standard work week)
