POSITION SUMMARY:
The Infrastructure Maintenance & Construction Services (IMCS) Operations Support Department develops strategy and implements business processes and systems solutions collaboratively across IMCS to promote best practices in infrastructure asset management. Within IMCS Operation Support, the Asset Management Strategy team sets the strategic direction for the department, Engineering Disciplines, and Divisions based on Amtrak’s corporate objectives and the goals of the Vice President of IMCS. The Industrial Engineering team works with IMCS Production and Division Maintenance personnel to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their work. The Systems Engineering group within IMCS Operations Support—comprised of the Infrastructure GIS team, the Engineering Asset Management System team, and the Data Analytics team—delivers and implements the tools and technology required to support process improvements and manage asset data to enable data driven decision-making for infrastructure assets.
The IMCS Operations Support Department drives value by delivering solutions that reduce asset downtime, extend equipment life, and enable the right people to perform the right work at the right time, optimizing system performance to reduce the overall cost of asset management and achieve Amtrak’s strategic goals. The IMCS Operations Support Intern will work across the various teams, gaining an understanding of how they work together to promote an industry-leading asset management practice for Amtrak’s infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The IMCS Operations Support Intern works with multiple teams in the department. Examples of tasks to be performed are broken down by team below.
Asset Management Strategy Team
- Collect, consolidate, and cleanse asset data from various sources to ensure accuracy and integrity, supporting informed decision-making and strategic planning.
- Conduct research on best practices and trends in asset management.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation related to processes and projects.
Industrial Engineering Team
- Support projects to improve infrastructure reliability and determine the best use of personnel for safe, cost-efficient operations, and maximum productivity
- Provide support for process-improvement projects including time studies and process documentation.
- Assist in the evaluation of internal processes and controls and recommend enhancements to information pipeline.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Team
- Validate existing asset data in the Infrastructure Asset Database using a variety of data sources (video, orthoimagery, pdf’s etc.)
- Work with stakeholders to collect required master data using various IMCS tools to incorporate the updates and changes into the Infrastructure Asset Database.
- Conduct field asset collection, as needed.
Asset Management System (Maximo) Team
- Perform data cleansing in the Maximo database such as:
- Create and update Job Plan and Preventative Maintenance records.
- Create load sheets for new Inspection & Test Data to comply with FRA and Amtrak standards and regulations.
- Update current Inspection & Test Data.
Data Analytics Team
- Support the technical team and functional leads in developing the data pipeline and assist in maintaining system configuration documentation.
- Perform data extractions and custom reports to support dashboarding and reporting.
- Conduct quality assurance checks of failure data to identify inconsistencies and potential areas of improvement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
- Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering (Industrial, Civil, Mechanical or Electrical), Business Administration, Organizational Management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Data Science or a related field.
- Must have at least 3 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a senior status at minimum.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of enterprise asset management principles such as lifecycle costing
- Knowledge of fundamentals of process optimization
- Familiarity with GIS concepts (mapping and spatial analysis)
- Foundations in data analysis
- Problem solving and critical thinking
- Basic project management understanding
- Effective communication, collaboration and teamwork skills
Work Environment :
- Travel to other Amtrak office and right-of-way sites that are not accessible by train travel may be required.
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025
