Leidos is seeking a passionate, detail-oriented problem-solver to serve as a Modeling and Simulation Engineer to support the Advanced Materials Department. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific and IT solutions.
The Advanced Materials Department is a multi-disciplinary team that provides materials engineering expertise for every phase of a program. With backgrounds in materials science, chemistry/chemical engineering, physics, among others, the department has experience in executing a variety of efforts from R&D, to prototype development, to supporting design and build tasks for manufacturing. Beyond subject matter expertise, the department has the analysis equipment, multi-physics modelling capability and experimental lab space to support activities ranging from proof-of-concept experimentation to manufacturing support.
Primary Responsibilities
As an integral member of the Advanced Materials Department, this position will balance multiple activities including but not limited to:
- Support multiple Leidos programs as a subject matter expert in the area of Modeling and Simulation (M&S), including material and thermal response of composite thermal protection systems in extreme environments
- Use data from the technical data package, hardware qualification and acceptance tests, and other materials, thermal, and environmental tests to support analysis activities and makes significant contributions to related test planning
- Assist in guiding the selection and/or development of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) tools
- Further develop and/or integrate existing Modeling and Simulation tools to build integrated system with coupled physics capabilities
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent STEM degree from an ABET accredited institution with 8+ years applicable experience (or M.S. with 6+ years)
- Must be a resident of Huntsville, AL area or willing to relocate to work on-site at the Huntsville, AL office
- Substantial experience with ABAQUS, ATAC, US3D, CMA, Cantera, LEMANS-MOPAR, or alternate aero/thermal and material response codes
- Experience executing thermo-structural analysis supporting design/production/integration for systems that experience both static and transient load cases
- Experience communicating to cross-disciplinary teams and customers
- Strong communication and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
- U.S. Citizenship and must meet the eligibility criteria to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with composite Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) manufacturing processes and technologies
- Experience with modeling and testing of composite materials directly supporting Thermal Protection Systems production/integration/development for hypersonic vehicles or reentry systems
- Experience with modeling material response and ablation at the meso and/or micro scale
- Substantial experience in high performance computing
- Experience utilizing Python or equivalent programming language to build multi-code couplers
- Experience leading Modeling and Simulation teams
- Advanced degree (M.S. or higher) in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and/or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and/or Computational Chemistry

Pay Range:
Pay Range $101,400.00 - $183,300.00
