POSITION SUMMARY:
The Work Group Planning & Coordination Extern position is a great opportunity to develop a foundation for the intricate planning and coordination process for multi-discipline infrastructure construction and maintenance work groups on Amtrak’s network. This position will assist with short term and long-term planning and implementation of in-house and third-party work groups primarily along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and coordination of labor resources to support each work group.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with the development of regional schedules (MS Excel or P6) for planning and coordination of construction and large-scale maintenance activities on and adjacent to our railroad.
- Assist with project-level interface on major in-house capital construction projects (such as Susquehanna River Bridge Replacement, Portal North Bridge, Sawtooth Bridge, B&P/Frederick Douglass Tunnel, etc.) to determine track outage needs, labor support needs, and potential operational (train movement) delay impacts.
- Assist with train movement simulations to forecast projected work group impacts to railroad operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recently graduated within the last 3yrs or no later than May 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Transportation Planning, or related field.
- Desire to learn or further develop knowledge about the railroad industry.
- Detail-oriented with ability to multi-task.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Microsoft Office 360/365 products.
- Quickly understands and uses processes, technologies and ideas that are continually being updated.
- Ability to work under time constraints and with essential deadlines.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be a team player.
- Good written, organizational, and oral communication skills.
PREFERED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION OR QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with commercial construction and/or railroad operations.
- Familiar with Primavera P6 scheduling software.
WORK ENVIORNMENT:
- Primarily main-office environment based at either 30th Street Station or 1801 Market Street in Philadelphia.
- Railroad right-of-way and/or project site visits may be required occasionally for short durations, based on department and/or specific project need
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 program will start May 19, 2025.
