We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Inside Machine department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for five (5)
Diesel Mechanics J1 - J4. Must have main shafting experience. M-F 0600-1445 some weekends.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
Diesel Mechanics are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.
- POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years directly related experience.
POSITION DEMANDS (Experience)
- Must have main shafting experience.
- Must have at least 5 years experience in diesel engine repair and or outside machinist
- Must be able to complete work with little guidance from Supervisor.
- Basic knowledge of Standard Items a plus
- Must have basic knowledge of shop equipment

JOURNEYPERSON 4
- Must meet all Journeyman Diesel Mechanic 3 requirements
- Must be able to oversee a small group of people and lead the job from start to finish via work specification and EPCP/PCP/CWP
- Must have the ability to plan, organize and prioritize well and handle problems and concerns without assistance
- Proficient with the requirements of the process and the equipment used
- Proficient with the requirements of the applicable OSHA and NAVSEA Standard Items
- Must know how to set up a job and correspond with other shops
- Must be able to replace, repair and test diesel engine components
- Must be able to execute a specification item with no supervision
- Must be able to use dial indicator and perform alignment checks
- Able to perform checkpoints with minimal supervision
JOURNEYPERSON 3
- Must meet all Journeyman Diesel Mechanic 2 requirements
- Must be able to read tech manuals and drawings
- Must be able to assist in job from start to finish via work specification and EPCP/PCP/CWP
- Must be able to complete a JSA and identify all safety issues
- With little supervision, must be able to replace, repair and test diesel engine components
- Must be able to troubleshoot cooling systems and report discrepancies
- Must be able to execute a specification item with little supervision
- Must be able to accurately write an Intershop Work Request that contains all requested work in detail
- Must be able to execute all EPCP/PCP work
- Must be able to set valve lash
- Must be familiar with applicable NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA standards
JOURNEYPERSON 2
- Must meet all Journeyman Diesel Mechanic 1 requirements
- Must have ability to set up dial indicators and perform an alignment check
- Must be able to identify and properly use diesel specialty tools
- Must have knowledge and competency of shaft alignments
- Must have the ability to read and understand QA-17s and documentation purposes
- Must have knowledge of applicable NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA standards
- Must be able to identify proper procedures when safety hazards are encountered
- Must be familiar with chemicals used and when they are used, the environmental and biological impact of the chemicals, and the proper way to dispose of chemicals and waste
JOURNEYPERSON 1
- Must be able to assist with replacing, repairing and testing diesel engine components
- Must have good housekeeping skills
- Must be able to identify safety hazards
- Must have knowledge of hot work requirements, rules and regulations
- Must be familiar with applicable NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA standards
- Must know how to use and take care of hand and power tools
- Must have knowledge of precision and measuring instruments, understand their basic uses and identify those required for the job
- Must be able to calculate metric conversions
- Must have knowledge of Expanded Process Control Procedure /Process Control Procedure/CWP requirements
- Must have knowledge of metal and the make-up of metals
- Must be able to identify thread pitch and size
- Must be WAF trained
- Must be able to read tech manuals and drawings
- Must be able to perform their job safely
- Must know what P.P.E. to use and when
- Must be able to navigate a ship and understand compartment designation
- Must understand ship nomenclature
- Must understand the purpose and information contained in Safety Data Sheets
- Must understand the process and procedure for spills
