Catalent Biologics Emeryville, CA site, formerly the startup company Redwood Bioscience, has developed a proprietary approach for site-specific bioconjugation to produce next-generation antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). This technology, termed SMARTag®, is based on use of the aldehyde-tag site-specific protein modification technology and Catalent’s novel conjugation chemistry and proprietary, stable linkers. SMARTag is a clinical-stage technology that was named Runner Up for Best Platform at the 2022 World ADC Awards in San Diego, CA. The Catalent Biologics Emeryville site comprises a close-knit team of scientists working cross-functionally with each other to nimbly achieve our goals and milestones. We are a research site, working to develop therapeutic ADC drug candidates for clinical testing. We also continuously strive to improve and expand our technology platform. The team has a focus on publishing papers and filing intellectual property to contribute to the exciting and dynamic field of bioconjugation and drug conjugates.
Catalent Pharma Solutions at our Emeryville, CA location is seeking a Scientist in our Chemistry group who is a strong synthetic organic chemist and will be responsible for synthesis, purification, and characterization of bioactive molecules and ADC linkers within our multi-disciplinary drug development team. This Scientist, Chemistry will report to the Director of Chemistry.
This is a full-time position, Monday – Friday, day shift with flexible work hours. This position is based in Emeryville, CA, 94608 in the EmeryStation West campus, at 5959 Horton St., easily accessible by BART / EmeryGoRound, AMTRAK, or car (with private, secured, on-site parking provided).

The Role:
- Respond to the needs of both internal and external drug development programs using synthetic organic chemistry to troubleshoot and solve problems in the preparation of bioactive molecules, bioconjugate linkers, and other required organic materials
- Communicate results to the team and broader scientific community through publications and presentations
- Maintain an accurate lab notebook to support tech transfer and the protection of intellectual property
- Provide organic chemistry expertise and support cross-functional research activities as needed – creation and design of molecules used by our bioconjugation teams
- All other duties as assigned
The Candidate:
- Requires a Bachelor’s in chemistry with 7+ years of organic synthesis experience in industry, or Master’s in synthetic organic chemistry with 3+ years of industry experience, or PhD in organic chemistry with 0+ years of post-doctoral or industrial experience
- Must have demonstrated expertise in multi-step synthesis of complex organic molecules in milligram to multigram quantities is required
- Must have broad hands-on experience in purification of organic compounds using various chromatography methods
- Expertise with modern spectroscopic methods applied to small molecule structure determination including NMR and mass spectroscopy. Having hands on experience with HPLC, Mass Spec, chromatography, and organic synthesis, purification of organic molecules required
- Ability to independently design and execute experimental plans and troubleshoot complex synthetic problems. Experience with bioconjugates and/or high-potency bioactive molecules is a plus
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, ability to follow protocols and safety rules required
- Must be skilled at organizing and presenting data in scientific settings and team meetings. Ability to work at multiple levels with other scientific disciplines in a fast-paced small-sized team environment
- Physical requirements: must be able to sit/stand/walk regularly with use of computers/phones on a daily basis. Must be able to lift up to 15lbs
Pay:
- The anticipated salary range for this role in California is $117,000 to $135,000 annually. The final salary offered to a successful candidate may vary, and will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, skillset, education, business needs, etc. Catalent is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
