The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a dedicated Software Engineer II to participate in Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) Fellowship Cohort, Cohort 25-1 with USAA. The HOH Fellowship Program builds an extraordinary experience for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses that increase competitiveness and improve opportunities to find meaningful employment by providing development, skills, and exposure to corporate working environment and private sector business operations. HOH Fellowship Programs are best-in-class workforce development programs that are cohort based and twelve weeks in duration.
Within defined guidelines and framework, provides support to the Enterprise through delivering best in class technology solutions. Engaged in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle which include capturing and analyzing requirements, designing, testing, documenting, and implementing software, responding to outages.
As a participant in the Military Fellowship Program, we understand that in most cases Fellows are ending their active service commitments and actively relocating. Therefore, while participating in the Fellowship program, Fellows are authorized to work remotely. If selected for full time employment, we offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, or Plano, TX.
Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
What you'll do:
- Design, develop, code, and test technical solutions.
- Write code to deliver features, and improvements, on a regular basis.
- Investigates and resolve technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques.
- Continually improves operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.
- Prepares and installs solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
- Follows the software development lifecycle.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
- Bachelor’s Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree OR Approved certification from CodeUp, Galvanize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT).
- 2 years of software development experience specific to a subject area/technology.
- 1 year of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.
- Basic Understanding of one or more of the following: Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL, Go, and Python.
- Knowledge and understanding of fixing applications and systems within production issues.
- Ability to quickly understand applicable business acumen to provide appropriate Engineering solutions.
- Ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.
- Basic understanding of cloud technologies and tools.
- Current participant in the Hiring Our Heroes Cohort 25-1 Fellowship Programs or a current USAA contractor in the 24-3 HOH Non-direct cohort.
What sets you apart:
- Solid knowledge of API development with Java/C#/Golang.
- Expertise with Web Services using REST framework and web development with JavaScript/REACT.
- Monitoring and analyzing machine-generated data with Elastic, Datadog, and Kafka.
- Experience with event driven architecture, to include Kafka streams.
- Relational database design and optimization with UDB/DB2 and SQL Server (Hibernate).
- Cloud Computing maintenance and deployment with Amazon Web Services, Open Shift, and Docker.
What we offer:
Hiring Our Heroes Fellows are paid by the HOH program.
If selected for a full-time role, USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The hiring range for this position is: $74,210.00 - $141,830.00.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
