SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
This position is responsible for the preparation and review of designs for complex catenary design engineering projects and studies to repair, rehabilitate or construct new railroad electrification facilities. This position will also be responsible for responding to catenary related construction correspondence in active railroad environments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Review and manage engineering designs, and construction related RFIs, work plans, material submissions, and design changes prepared by outside consultants for projects to be constructed on Amtrak property and/or behalf of outside third parties to ensure compliance with industry and Amtrak standards.
- Provide technical expertise to other departments and make engineering decisions for Division Engineers and their staffs.
- Provide Construction Related Engineering assistance when requested by Division Personnel, Amtrak Contractors, and when necessary conduct field inspections in order to make engineering decisions, ensure project timelines are met, and oversee quality control on site.
- Oversee small construction projects (<$250K) to ensure proper implementation of designs, management of contractors, and addressing field issues.
- Develop and produce Catenary related designs for in-house construction.
- Participate in the planning, design/construction, scheduling, and cost estimation of large scale electrification projects.
- Track project progress, prepare status reports, and assist in maintaining project budgets and schedules.
- Interact with representatives from various Railroads and Government organizations.
- Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents for emergency repairs and/construction. Monitor and control project budgets, schedules, and quality standards for emergency repairs and/or construction.
- Provide technical guidance and support to associate electrical engineers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Construction, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- 2 - 3 years of related work experience
- Demonstrated experience in design of OCS and Transmission systems and other Electric Traction facilities
- Demonstrated experience in Structural Steel and Concrete design
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, MS Projects, STADD, and AutoCAD
- Must be computer literate and capable of writing computer programs or spreadsheet programs to streamline design time efficiency
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Civil, Construction, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Demonstrated experience in planning, project budgets, scheduling, quality standards, and overall Project Management.
- Demonstrated experience in design of catenary, transmission lines, structural steel, concrete and foundations.
- Extensive experience in design of OCS and Transmission systems and other Electric Traction facilities
- Demonstrated experience in Project Management, Planning/Scheduling, and Cost Estimating
WORK ENVRIORNMENT:
- Based in New York City, NY, Onsite 4 days/week
- Travel Requirements: Up to 25%

The salary/hourly range is $86,500-$111,996. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
