The Nationwide Insurance Office of Government Relations in Washington, DC is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Director to join our team.
The position will report to the Vice President of Government Relations and work closely with the GR team to advocate on Nationwide priorities related to financial services, insurance, tax, and related issues before Congress, the Administration, and DC-based trade associations.
Candidates must have strong communications skills, both written and oral. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory process, preferably through at least seven years of either congressional/executive branch experience and/or government relations experience in the insurance, financial services, or related field.
Candidates should demonstrate an ability to take initiative have strong organizational, time management, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Must also be proficient in legislative research and the use of standard computer software (Microsoft Office Suite).
This position will require occasional travel and sometimes unpredictable hours. This is a hybrid work schedule of in office and remote.

As a Senior Director, you'll provide leadership on public policy advocacy and communication on a variety of Nationwide Financial issues, including retirement security policy, tax reform, regulatory policy and other issues. We'll count on you to play a major advocacy and public policy leadership role among colleagues, trade groups and Members of Congress.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Leads enterprise advocacy efforts related to federal corporate and Property & Casualty tax issues. Works with business leaders and Finance to identify significant corporate tax threats to Nationwide and opportunities for positive change. Engages business leaders to ensure they have the appropriate information to understand the potential changes and to develop advocacy strategy.
Works closely with peer company executives (Senior Vice President Office of the CEO level) to develop insurance industry advocacy strategy and to directly execute advocacy work.
Serves as the face and voice of Nationwide, representing Nationwide to the highest professional degree. Maintains and improves the reputation of the enterprise as the most credible industry voice for representatives, their staffs, and regulators.
Develops relationships with key Congressional offices where Nationwide has a significant constituent presence and/or members serving on key legislative committees.
Builds and grows key trade association relationships and represents the company’s interests at related meetings and events. Speaks on behalf of the company and our key interests/priorities in these trade settings and with external business partners. Engages and manages relationships with external consultants working on Nationwide Financial-focused issues.
Partners in leading advocacy work related to federal and state efforts to update or modify retirement security policy. Issues include topics like "best interest" standard of care, emergency savings accounts, Secure Act proposals (vETF), among others. Work includes development of lobbying strategy, direct advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and with Administration officials and frequent updates to business leaders about these issues.
Provides frequent written legislative/regulatory updates as well as internal Nationwide committee updates.
Makes presentations at public events to both Nationwide and external client audiences about advocacy efforts. As the reach and impact of federal regulation to Nationwide increases, there is a proportional increase in client demand for updates and an understanding of federal regulatory/legislative activity.
Leads and directs enterprise advocacy efforts related to legislative/regulatory changes impacting Nationwide’s employee benefit plans (with a focus on retirement/health plans). Responsible for all aspects of advocacy from strategic direction and planning to client management to implementing advocacy strategy on Capitol Hill.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Associate Vice President, Government Relations.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in government relations, political science, business or other related areas. Master's degree or Law degree preferred but not required.
Experience: Seven to 10 years of advocacy experience, strong technical knowledge of the political process, the legislative system and operations of regulatory agencies, legal environment affecting Nationwide operations and key elected and appointed officials.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Excellent verbal and written skills. Ability to encourage trust and confidence from politicians, legislators and other senior Nationwide executives. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Broad knowledge of insurance and financial services issues.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experience may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.The national salary range for Sr Director, Government Relations : $136,000.00-$268,000.00The expected starting salary range for Sr Director, Government Relations : $143,000.00 - $239,000.00
