The Leidos Innovations Center currently has an opening for a Principal Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer to work in our San Diego, CA office. This is an exciting opportunity to develop disruptive RF technologies that could be integrated into future DoD systems.

As a Principal RF Engineer, you will directly support a rapidly growing sector within the Division by designing, developing, and demonstrating new RF technologies that could enable enhanced performance in compact form factors that enable fundamentally new Defense capabilities.

Your responsibilities would initially be working with current RF engineers to understand performance trades, investigation into new material approaches such as reconfigurable RF metamaterials, and building new insights and capabilities in integration of such technologies into future systems. Additional responsibilities may include serving as a Principal Investigator (PI) on Contract R&D efforts with the Government, working on novel concepts through internal R&D (IRAD) effort, and may include the opportunity to serve as a supervisor.
This position can be based out of San Diego, CA or Arlington, VA. Occasional telework opportunities may be available.
Primary Responsibilities
- Leverage expertise in RF metamaterials to analyze trades in performance and size, weight, and power for disruptive RF payloads
- Utilize modeling tools to project performance vs power consumption trades for disruptive RF systems
- Collaborate with RF engineers to evaluate and mature RF technologies, and develop a pipeline to transition them to production and integration into deployable systems
- Contribute to developing a roadmap of novel RF technologies for future systems, and explore nascent concepts
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors in engineering, physics, optics, or equivalent field with 12+ years of prior relevant experience or Master’s degree in engineering, physics, optics, or equivalent field with 10+ years of prior relevant experience or Doctorate in technical domain above with 8+ years of prior relevant experience.
- Must have be a U.S. citizen
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Proficient in applied computational electromagnetics and antenna systems
- Expertise in RF device design using finite element-based design tools such as COMSOL, CST, or Lumerical
- Strong understanding of material electrical and mechanical properties
- Expertise in nascent RF device concepts such as metamaterials and time-varying systems
- Proficient in Windows
- Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work directly with customers and deliver results
- Mission oriented with a strong ability to guide a team towards goals and deliver real world products
- Proficient with technical writing, documentation, and organization
- Robust sense of initiative, a self-starter who can work independently
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Doctorate in engineering, physics, optics, or equivalent field is preferred.
- Active Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance
- Experience in designing and testing electrically-small antenna systems
- Experience in building and validating RF device concepts in experimental prototypes
- Experience with integrated circuit layout, printed circuit board (PCB design), National Instruments SW such as LabVIEW, Multisim, PXI
- Programming experience, C/C++, Visual Basic. Aptitude and desire to perform programming for the purpose of data manipulation and processing

Pay Range:
Pay Range $122,200.00 - $220,900.00
