SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Assistant Mechanical Superintendent has responsibility and oversight for the activities associated with car shops, locomotive shops, repair-in-place tracks and Service & Inspection terminals for operating divisions as directed by the Mechanical Superintendant
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates inspection and mechanical service activities with internal constituencies such as Transportation Operations and Rolling Stock Engineering and local commuter, regional, and state organizations as appropriate.
- Directs the strict implementation of maintenance alerts, FRA and FDA regulatory requirements, supplier maintenance instructions and SMPs
- Implements inspection and servicing process improvements as appropriate to support geographically and temporarily extended areas.
- Implements inspection and mechanical service-related safety plans and programs
- Assists and participates with cross-functional teams, including process focus teams, to ensure proper management and control of inspection and mechanical service project schedules, financials, and resources.
- Assists and participates in the implementation of goals and objectives required to safely and efficiently complete inspection and mechanical service programs and projects within scope, schedule, and budget.
- Monitors the status of materials procurement and ensures proper materials installation.
- Monitors productivity to ensure efficient resource utilization and makes adjustments and procedural changes as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering or in a related field required or the equivalent combination of education and training and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Demonstrated knowledge of railway and rail transit rolling stock to include extensive servicing, repair, and maintenance program experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to safety program methodology and its application.
- Some experience in project and inventory management; technical supervision; planning, organizing, and scheduling for procedural and operational methods.
- Some experience in budget and financial control; contract management
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 7 or more years of experience preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of domestic and international railway engineering regulatory requirements.
- Some process management experience
- Solid leadership and decision-making skills.
- Solid organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to recognize opportunities for change designed to address chronic issues and concerns.

Physical Demands
- Constantly or frequently uses a computer keyboard, monitor, and mouse to perform a variety of tasks.
- Constantly or frequently sits, stands, walks, and may lift, carry, push, or pull objects of various weights; may reach, kneel, crouch, bend, or twist in order to perform administrative tasks (e.g., filing, retrieving materials from desks, bookcases, moving around an office setting).
- Will be in the field subject to walking on uneven surfaces, climbing over obstacles, and working in tunnels and restricted spaces during the course of investigations.
- Will be in the field working around maintenance facilities and rail yards during the course of investigations and remediation implementation.
- Will be working around, under, and in various types of passenger cards and locomotives.

- Frequently works inside a climate-controlled environment, but will occasionally work outdoors and be subject to adverse weather conditions and fumes or airborne particles.

- Frequently or occasionally subject to travel throughout and outside the region as required (e.g., via airplane, train, automobile)

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The target salary is $130,000, Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
