Description
Leidos has an opening in our Albuquerque, NM office for a Principal Mechanical Engineer with experience in the development, deployment, operation, and sustainment of weapon systems for the Department of Defense. The ideal candidate will possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills, operate independently, collaborate effectively with teammates, be receptive to feedback, thrive on and seek opportunities for self-improvement and growth, and can establish solid working relationships with technical staff, peers within the division, as well as our external government customers. The successful candidate will work with a team of engineers and scientists in a research and development environment, and will guide the team to incorporate proven directed energy (DE) technologies into fully capable weapon systems for the United States Air Force and other customers.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create 3D solid models of innovative hardware and systems and conduct mechanical analysis in, stress, tolerance, heat transfer, and vibrations to ensure designs meet requirements.
- Develop mechanical designs in accordance with established company policies, standards and customer specifications
- Work with government, Leidos and vendor machine shops to procure parts and components
- Contribute to the overall success of projects and programs by actively interfacing with the Leidos team and customers to develop creative and robust mechanical designs
- Resolve manufacturing and testing issues, including providing innovative mechanical design and fabrication ideas
- Provides technical direction to internal functional engineering disciplines and vendors.
- Develops and presents reports and technical briefs that clearly communicate complex technical concepts during engineering meetings and program reviews.
- Routinely functions in a technical advisory or leadership role for a project/program.
- Represents the organization as a prime technical contact within the engineering team for assigned project(s)/program(s).
- Addresses technical issues requiring novel and creative approaches drawing on engineering concepts.
- Serve as Principal Investigator on complex multi-disciplinary programs that typically include field demonstration of hardware systems
- Work on problems of diverse scope, determining methods and procedures to be used on new assignments, and providing feedback and recommendations to other technical personnel.
- Interact with outside customers, suppliers, and functional peer groups
- Some travel and work at remote sites for limited time periods may be occasionally required
- Regular review of program status including tracking and review by both Engineering and Program Leadership
- Actively monitor, track, and manage program tasks, performance, subcontractors, risks, costs, and schedule
- Conduct quality review and submission of all deliverables
- Participates in the development of new or expansion of existing business opportunities.
- Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
Basic Qualifications
- BSME and 12-15+ years of prior relevant experience or MSME with 10 years of prior experience
- US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
- Ability and willingness to adhere to government safety requirements
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and communicate with machinists, technicians, engineers and scientists
- Ability to organize and effectively work on multiple projects at the same time
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
- Mentors and coaches other technical staff
- Serve as Technical Lead on complex multi-disciplinary proposals
- Experience with Microsoft Office
- Proficiency with SolidWorks
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PDMWorks and Simulation FEA
- Experience designing vacuum and pressure vessels
- Knowledge of electromagnetic and pulsed power component design
- Masters degree
- Active DoD security clearance

Our Directed Energy team in Albuquerque consists of approximately 100 scientists, engineers, technicians, drafters, fabricators and support staff with backgrounds in advanced physics, electrical and mechanical engineering, electromagnetics, lasers, and high-power microwaves. For over three decades our team has worked with government laboratories to push the limits of the state-of-the-art in several high-tech fields and continue to do so on several programs.

Pay Range:
Pay Range $122,200.00 - $220,900.00
