We are currently seeking a dedicated Tax Analyst to participate in Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) Fellowship Cohort 25-1 with USAA. The HOH Fellowship Program builds an extraordinary experience for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses that increase competitiveness and improve opportunities to find significant employment by providing development, skills, and exposure to corporate working environment and private sector business operations. HOH Fellowship Programs are best-in-class workforce development programs that are cohort based and twelve weeks in duration.
As a participant in the Military Fellowship Program, we understand that in most cases Fellows are ending their active service commitments and actively relocating. Therefore, while participating in the Fellowship program, Fellows are authorized to work remotely. If selected for full time employment, we offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in the following location: San Antonio, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
Supports specific aspects of USAA's corporate tax liability to include preparation and maintenance of tax records, returns, and other related materials. Possesses knowledge of tax laws and regulations for a tax specialty which may include but not limited to state and local tax.
The Opportunity
What you'll do:
- Within defined guidelines and framework, applies developing knowledge in the preparation, maintenance and analysis of moderately complex tax records to include but not limited to tax returns.
- Under general supervision, ensures tax records, tax returns and analysis are aligned with required tax regulations to include tax laws, regulations, court decisions, regulatory agency rulings/decisions, and GAAP and STAT accounting rules.
- May be required to research tax issues, proposed, new and/or changing tax laws and regulations, or decisions from judicial and regulatory agencies. Identifies issues for partner concern.
- Uses acquired fundamental knowledge of financial business systems to accomplish tax deliverables.
- Gives to special projects across the enterprise that may have tax implications.
- May chip in to the definition of data requirements for business systems to ensure accurate and compliant tax filing and information reporting.
- Responsible for research and resolution to internal and external tax audits.
- Provides insights and guides business leaders on various tax issues in partnership with more experienced team members.
- May contribute to the development of strategies, tools, and methodologies to measure, monitor, and report risks related to tax.
- May assist in implementation of new risk policies and standard processes related to corporate tax.
- May be required to research potential impacts from new and changing tax laws and regulations and provide tax options to reduce tax burden.
- May assist in tax audit responsibilities by conducting tax research.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures
What you have:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a similar business concentration required; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
- 2 years experience of tax accounting or tax law, and accounting principles and demonstrated application towards delivering similar work products to include applying tax or accounting rules for tax preparation and compliance is required.
- Fundamental discernment in the areas of financial services business operations, finance operations, tax and accounting industry practices and emerging trends required.
- Experience researching and interpreting tax laws and regulations related to work product.
- Knowledge of GAAP and STAT accounting rules.

- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Working knowledge of Adobe Pro, including tick marks and stamps
What we offer:
Hiring Our Heroes Fellows are paid by the HOH program.
If selected for a full-time role, USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The hiring range for this position is: $59,290 - $106,230.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
